Breed: Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

National Terrier Club Championship Show Saturday 4th April 2026

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

Firstly, I wish to record my thanks to the exhibitors for a wonderful entry of 56, making it the fourth highest in the show. I was supported by two very experienced stewards, Colin Woodward and Graham Beale, who organised the ring so well and thereby made my task much easier.

I first encountered this breed in the West Country many years ago when judging a number of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers at an Open Show. On that occasion I met the highly respected breed specialist, Margaret Howes. Noting my interest in the breed, she encouraged me to learn more about it. This led to my passing the SCWT Club’s ‘hands-on assessment’ and, a few years later, the RKC’s JPD examination.

I was sad that Margaret is no longer with us to witness my first CC appointment for the breed, but I hope she might be looking down and keen to give me her evaluation after judging!!

1st: Williams, Mrs Sharne & Williams, Mr Gerald Hopla Kia At Gwendonydd (Imp Dnk). 18 months. A most attractive young bitch who immediately appealed for her overall balance, type and quality. She has a feminine head with dark pigmentation and a truly appealing, typical Wheaten expression. Her excellent neck flows cleanly into well-laid shoulders, contributing to a correct front assembly and pleasing, balanced outline. Deep chest with well-sprung ribs carried well back. In good body for her age. Her topline is firm and level, both standing and on the move. Hindquarters are well-muscled with a moderate bend of stifle, used to advantage on the move. Both in the class and in the challenge she was a standout, particularly when covering the ground with ease, whilst maintaining her stunning outline in profile. Presented in excellent coat and condition, with correct texture and colour. I felt she combined breed type, construction and movement to the highest level on the day and a worthy recipient of the BCC.

2nd: Black, Ms Suzy Hall & White, Mr Chris Mayurasana Cristal Visions 20 months old. A little on the shy side. She is well balanced and sports a lovely coat. Her body is well ribbed with a deep chest and a secure topline. She moved OK, but maturity will be on her side.

Her outline is particularly attractive. She stands on strong, well-boned legs with neat, well-padded feet. She is well-bodied for her age, with good depth and spring of rib, maintaining a secure, level topline both when standing and on the move. Although not in her best coat today, this did not detract from her overall quality.

2nd: Evans, Hammond, Mr & Ms S V, T J Calvenace So What (AI). 3 Years. Of very happy disposition. Her coat is of good quality. Body has well-sprung ribs and a secure topline. Dentition is correct.
