EAST OF SCOTLAND CANINE CLUB PREMIER OPEN SHOW

SUNDAY 1ST MARCH 2026

JUDGE: MISS ANNE BRYSON (Inukshuk)

Thank you to the Committee for the opportunity to judge at this show. I accepted the appointment at short notice following a late change to the schedule, and was genuinely humbled by the wonderful entry of 110 dogs in total across the AV Puppy Stakes and Working Group. Thank you all for your patience in awaiting my critiques following an exceptionally busy period of previously arranged commitments.

I was extremely pleased with the quality throughout. I would happily have divided the AV Puppy Stakes by Group and awarded each separately, such was the depth of quality, and I felt my eventual Working Group line-ups would not have looked out of place at a Championship Show.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who supported my appointment and entrusted me with your wonderful dogs. Temperaments throughout were delightful, and I was particularly impressed by how well socialised and conditioned the puppies were. Thank you also to my stewards and to the Committee for looking after us so well — the delicious pastries were very much appreciated!

AV PUPPY STAKES (48,16)

1. Willunat’s CLAUWILL OLIVER JUNIOR, Rhodesian Ridgeback - Very handsome 7-month-old red wheaten male with a small white flash to chest and short, glossy coat. A beautifully balanced puppy who presented a clean, correctly proportioned outline and was remarkably well put together for his age. Strong, fairly long neck into well-laid shoulders, good width of forechest for his age, straight, well-boned forelegs and compact feet with well-arched toes. Moderately sprung ribs with appropriate depth of chest for his age, strong, muscled loin and a well-angulated rear with hocks well let down. Correct croup and tail carriage. Typical head with a beautiful expression; flat, broad skull, well-defined stop and a long, deep, powerful muzzle. Bright, well-set eyes and correctly set and carried ears. Clean lips and scissor bite. He particularly impressed on the move, maintaining a strong topline with a long, fluid, effortless stride, no excessive lift and a tendency to single track. Super to see. A very promising youngster who I expect will have a bright future ahead of him. Pleased to see him later awarded Hound Puppy Group 4

2. Kilgour’s GEMPENI HEARTBEAT, Beagle - Just 6 months old and on his first outing, this lovely tricolour male conveyed such happy confidence and charm. A sturdy, compactly built hound, well balanced throughout and showing quality without coarseness. A pleasing, typical head with correct skull, well-defined stop and a particularly kindly, appealing expression, complemented by long, low-set ears hanging close to the cheeks. Excellent well-laid shoulder with matching rear angulation. Pleasing forechest and well-sprung rib for his age. Straight, well-muscled forelegs of round bone, short pasterns and good, tight feet. Well muscled through the body with strong loin and only very slight tuck-up. Well-bent stifles and well-let-down hocks. Correct croup and high-set tail, carried gaily and showing the required white tip, completed a pleasing, balanced outline. Held a firm, level topline on the move, moving freely with good reach in front and drive behind. For one so young he presented a very complete picture, and his confidence and obvious enjoyment of his first day in the ring were delightful to see. A very promising puppy with much to look forward to.

3. Anderson’s ALEPENKYE KENSINGTON TO URIAKIN, Siberian Husky, later Working Puppy Group 1

4. Johnstone & Greigs’s OLEARIA WESTFALEN ONE HEART, Rottweiler, later Working Puppy Group 2

WORKING GROUP

ROTTWEILER

POSTGRADUATE (5,1)

1. Johnstone & Greigs’s OLEARIA WESTFALEN ONE HEART - Very promising 7 month old bitch of excellent breed type, substantial yet feminine and beautifully balanced for her age. Medium-length head with broad skull, moderately arched forehead, well-boned cheeks without prominence and a fairly deep muzzle of correct 2:3 proportions. Dark almond-shaped eyes, neat ears set high and wide apart and lying close to the cheeks, black nose and correct scissor bite. Strong, clean neck of fair length, slightly arched. Well-laid shoulders and close-fitting elbows; straight, well-boned forelegs balanced by muscular, very well-angulated hindquarters. Strong through the body with good depth for age, round compact feet with toes well arched, and a correctly set tail. Correct medium-length, coarse, flat coat. Best mover in the class, showing a good stride and powerful hindthrust while remaining firm and stable through the back. An exciting and good natured puppy with a very bright future. BOB, BPIB, Working Puppy Group 2, previously awarded Reserve AV Puppy Stakes.

2. Jarvie’s MARRAMEAD PRINCE OF PORAR - Well-proportioned 2 year old male with good bone. Pleasing masculine head of medium length, correctly set ears lying close to the cheeks and a calm gaze. Strong neck leading into a broad, deep chest with well-sprung ribs. May develop a little more forechest with further maturity. Good balance of body depth to leg length. Straight forelegs and reasonable feet, although I preferred the more compact feet of the winner. Strong through the back with a broad croup and muscular hindquarters. Presented a pleasing profile on the move, but the winner was cleaner on the out and back.

3. Headspeath’s JANTAVIA SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY JW

4. Dea’s BUGARIVO VHALLA

OPEN (6, 3)

1. Hislop’s OLEARIA QUEEN OF CLUBS - Well-made, feminine 3 year old bitch presented in excellent condition, with much to like in her overall balance and construction. Pleasing head with well-defined stop, dark brown eyes and correctly set ears lying close to the cheeks; would prefer just a fraction more length to muzzle. Strong, shapely neck of fair length leading into balanced forequarters, with shoulder and upper arm of good length, straight muscular forelegs and good bone. Broad, deep chest with well-sprung ribs and a firm topline. A shade longer cast than ideal, but well muscled throughout, with balanced, powerful hindquarters and excellent compact feet. Moved out positively, presenting a pleasing, balanced profile and maintaining her shape well on the move.

2. Jarvie’s CH KAYSHILLBLUE ZEUS OF LORAYLA JW - Impressive, masculine 4 year old male. Good head, dark brown, almond-shaped eyes, but a somewhat more pronounced stop than my ideal. Neck of fair length, strong, round and very muscular, leading into well-laid shoulders. Would ideally like a little more length and slope to upper arm. Particularly good proportions, scoring highly for the required relationship of height to length and balance of body depth to leg length. Loin short, deep and well muscled, with a broad, slightly sloping croup and good feet. A powerful, substantial dog who moved harmoniously, positively and unrestricted in all directions, maintaining a strong topline throughout. A quality Champion with much to commend him who pushed the winner hard today.

3. Deas’ BUGARIVO CAOIMHE

DOBERMAN

POSTGRADUATE (2,1)

1. Wymer’s KORIFEY MATISSE - Very promising 1 year old black and rust bitch, well proportioned and balanced throughout, with everything where it should be at this stage of her development. Feminine, clean-cut head of good length and wedge shape, with neat ears. Fairly long, lean neck into well-balanced forequarters, firm topline and good depth of body with a pleasing tuck-up. Well angulated fore and aft with well-developed hindquarters, presenting an essentially square, harmonious outline. Still understandably immature and should continue to develop to advantage with age. I understand this was only her sixth show; with greater ring experience, particularly on the move, she should continue to flourish.

OPEN (2,1)

1. Downie’s KNECHT MILEENA - Elegant, feminine 3 year old black and rust bitch of excellent breed type. Muscular and well balanced with a pleasing, essentially square outline. Particularly liked her long, clean-cut head, well filled under the eyes with good depth of muzzle, forming the correct elongated blunt wedge; flat skull, slight stop and good parallel head planes. Almond-shaped eyes and neat ears set high and lying close to the cheeks. Fairly long, clean neck leading into a strong, firm topline with the correct slight slope. Deep, well-sprung ribs reaching the elbow and correct tuck to belly. Muscled, sinewy forelegs with good round bone; being picky would prefer a little more length of upper arm. Well-developed, muscular hindquarters with good angulation. Gaited beautifully from all sides with correct rotary motion. Her overall balance, quality and breed type won her BOB.

ST. BERNARD

POSTGRADUATE (4,1)

1. Mccallum’s SWANASJONS ZEN OF MINE WITH NORALU - Promising 8 month old smooth coated bitch who won this strong class on her moderation and lovely overall shape. Well grown and substantial for age without being overdone. Particularly pleasing head, with flat cheeks and great depth from eye to lower jaw, clean throughout with no excess skin or excessive loose wrinkle on the brow. Medium sized ears lying close to the cheeks and not heavily feathered. Lovely overall shape and body, presenting a balanced picture for her age. Large, compact feet with well-arched toes. Full of puppy exuberance and rather naughty on the move today! An adorable BPIB.

2. Innes’ RIOLLIE’SMONKEY PUZZLE - 2 year old rough-coated dog, heavier in type than 1st. Substantial and powerful throughout with good depth of body and plenty of bone. Strong masculine head with good proportions, broad skull and short, full muzzle in front of eye, abrupt stop, with unmistakable prominence to brow. Preferred the tighter fit of eyelid on 1st. Thick neck leading into a broad body, ribs well rounded. Feet could be more compact and better arched. Still needs a little more ringcraft to show himself to full advantage, but pleasingly settled on the move as the class progressed.

3. W/D as overqualified

OPEN (3,2)

1. Jenkins & Nagrecha CH CHANDLIMORE GUNZ FOR HIRE - 5 year old rough-coated dog of excellent size and substance, masculine and powerful while retaining good overall balance. Impressive head, broad and slightly rounded in skull with well-defined stop, broad, full muzzle and strong jaws. Dark eye giving a kindly expression, ears of good size and lying close to the cheeks. Strong, muscular neck into a broad, deep body with well-sprung ribs and good breadth through the loin. Straight, strongly boned forelegs and large, compact feet. Broad, and well-angulated hindquarters with well-developed muscular thighs. Moved with easy, unhurried action, maintaining his balance and showing good power from behind. A sound, substantial and very pleasing representative of the breed. BOB.

BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

OPEN (2,1)

1. Carty’s BERNERVALLEY LORD OF ISLE - Tricolour male, 2 years old. Strong, sturdy and well-balanced male of good proportions, compact rather than long and presenting a pleasing overall picture. Strong head with dark, almond-shaped eyes and a kind expression; ears a little wide. Correct scissor bite. Strong, muscular neck leading into well-angulated shoulders and upper arms. Straight, well-muscled forelegs with correct pasterns. Broad, deep chest reaching the elbow, well ribbed with strong loins and a firm, straight back. Smoothly rounded rump. Broad and well-muscled hindquarters with well-bent stifles and strong, well-let-down hocks. Good, compact feet. Presented in abundant coat of good texture and possessing all the breed-preferred white markings. Bushy tail reaching just below the hock, carried happily on the move. Moved with a super, balanced stride, reaching well in front and following through strongly behind; particularly impressive once settled. A happy, good-natured male who fully deserved his class win, BOB, and Working Group 4.

GREAT DANE

OPEN (6,3)

1. Young’s LOMONDANE DINNAE BOTHER SHCEX - Nearly 6 year old fawn male of excellent overall type, muscular yet elegant and beautifully balanced. Long, clean neck into well-sloped shoulders, with good forechest, straight forelegs and strong flat bone. Deep body with well-sprung ribs, strong level topline and well-developed muscular hindquarters. Well-arched, cat-like feet. Presented in excellent condition. Superb on the move, lithe, free and ground-covering with good drive from behind. Very pleased to award him BOB and Working Group 1.

2. Ferguson’s IRISH/SWISS/BEL CH RENESCENT TOO HOT TO HANDLE FOR CHATEAUDAIN LUX JCH BW25 CW25 JW  - 2 year old bitch of lovely quality, presenting a super, balanced outline. Long, well-arched neck flowing into well-laid shoulders. Very good forequarters with straight forelegs and excellent cat-like, well-arched feet, the best in the class. Deep through the body with a strong topline and well-developed, correctly angulated hindquarters. Pleasing head, although I preferred the higher set and neater ear carriage of 1st. Moved freely, covering the ground well with good driving action. A quality bitch who pushed hard for the class; 1st just had the edge today in overall muscular development and power of movement.

3. Young’s CH ROUCANDANE SUMMER BREEZE

RUSSIAN BLACK TERRIER

OPEN (2,0)

Odonnell’s S IR CH KASASLANE REVENGE FOR NEUKIEBEAR (IKC) SHEX VW - Large, imposing nearly 8 year old bitch of excellent substance and heavy bone, presenting a well-proportioned, almost square outline. Powerful, muscular neck of good length flowing correctly into the topline at approx. 45 degrees. Well laid shoulders, straight forelegs and short, straight pasterns. Deep, well-sprung chest, with short, wide muscular loin showing the correct slight arch. Broad, muscular rump with barely perceptible slope to a high-set tail. Strong, well-developed hindquarters with well-bent stifles and low-set hocks. Large, rounded, well-arched feet. Elastic and ground-covering on the move with good reach and drive, forelegs converging slightly at the trot. BOB and Best AV Working Veteran.

Pleasing head with correct proportions and planes. Strong neck into well-constructed forequarters, straight well-boned legs, and large rounded feet. Well developed hindquarters for age. Still developing through the loin, as expected at this stage. High-set, well-furnished tail carried curled over the back. A very happy, exuberant youngster who was overjoyed to share the ring with her aunt but settled to show off her beautiful movement again in the Puppy Group. A very promising puppy. BPIB and Working Puppy Group 3.

LEONBERGER

OPEN (3,0)

1. Macdougall’s LEOFLAED JUST FOR YOU PRIDEOFELSA (AI) SHCEX - Just under 6 years, impressive bitch, large, strong, with excellent bone and well muscled whilst retaining femininity and elegance. Well-balanced, strong but not heavy head, lovely dark mask, close-fitting eyelids, medium brown oval eyes and kind expression; muzzle moderately tapered, medium stop; correct ears. Good length of slightly arched neck into well-laid shoulders, broad deep chest with good forechest, firm back and strong loin. Well-muscled and angulated hindquarters. Particularly good tight rounded feet with well-arched toes, the best in the class. Presented in lovely coat with good feathering where required. Best mover in the class, ground-covering and even, with good extension in front and drive from behind. A quality, sound and typical bitch who thoroughly deserved BOB.

2. Mandelson’s PRIDEOFELSEA POINSETTIA IN HONRUKAI - 2 years, lovely young feminine bitch with good substance and bone, very pleasing proportions and a balanced outline. Particularly liked her lovely feminine head and kind expression, with good proportions of muzzle to skull and dark mask. 3. Woollett’s PRIDEOFELSA DOUBLE MALT AT KELPIESGEM

BOXER

JUNIOR (1,0)

1. Bee’s THORPAIGE PICK ME FOR BEEANN - Almost 8 months old, very promising feminine brindle and white bitch, square in profile with a lovely outline and bone. Particularly liked her head, skull lean and cleanly covered, with muzzle correctly one-third the length of the head, perceptible chin, dark mask, and lovely dark eyes showing no haw. Round, clean-cut neck of ample length with distinctly marked nape and elegant arch down to the withers; long sloping shoulders, deep chest and well-arched ribs extending well to the rear, with short straight back. Currently a little over-angulated behind, which I hope will balance as she matures. Correct cat-like front feet with hind feet slightly longer. Really impressed on the move, free and ground-covering with good forward extension and powerful driving action behind. A lovely quality puppy with much promise; delighted to award her BPIB and Working Puppy Group 4.

POSTGRADUATE (2,0)

1. Lafferty’s JIMBREN LEGACY LIVES ON THROUGH TAURALORD JW - 1 year old brindle and white dog. Very pleasing, quality Boxer, square in profile with correct proportions and a strong, balanced outline. Head in proportion with correct one-third muzzle length and good balance of skull to muzzle. Ample length of neck into long, sloping shoulders; would prefer a little more length and slope to upper arm, but otherwise well angulated. Deep chest reaching the elbows, desirable 50:50 leg length, excellent well-arched ribs extending well to the rear, short straight back, short taut loin and good tuck-up. Particularly liked his hindquarter construction, with broad slightly sloping croup, long broad pelvis and good hind angulation, the stifle correctly positioned directly beneath the hip protuberance. Moved very well, free and ground covering, presenting a balanced picture on the move. BOB.

AVNSC WORKING OPEN (10,2)

1. Clayton’s DREAMCATCHER DE BARBA NEGRA AT NORTHDRUM (IMP FCA), Giant Schnauzer - Impressive 1 year old black bitch, powerfully built, robust and almost square, presenting a strong, balanced outline. Strong head of good length and proportion, with powerful muzzle, dark oval eyes and keen expression. Moderately long, strong neck set cleanly into well laid shoulders; would prefer a little more angulation through the upper arm but still very much in development age. Strong bone and good depth of chest, with body length equal to height at the withers. Strong, straight back, subtly higher at the shoulder as required, leading to a slightly sloping croup. Particularly well constructed behind, with strongly muscled hindquarters, well-defined stifles and excellent relationship from upper thigh through stifle to hock. Presented in super black coat. Really came into her own on the move: free, balanced and vigorous, with excellent reach and powerful drive while maintaining her topline. BEST AVNSC and Working Group 3.

2. Needham’s ASIAQ QUEEN FABIOLA, Canadian Eskimo Dog - 6 year old white and red bitch of outstanding breed type, powerful and substantial yet unmistakably feminine, beautifully balanced throughout. Lovely feminine, well-proportioned wedge-shaped head with obliquely set eyes, small thick ears and a most pleasing expression. Strong muscular neck into broad, well-laid shoulders, excellent depth and width of chest and substantial bone. Particularly well constructed fore and aft, with excellent return of upper arm, strong muscular loin, powerful hindquarters and well-turned stifles. Large, well-arched feet and a dense, weather-resistant double coat completed a very typical, functional outline. Superb on the move, powerful and brisk, covering the ground whilst remaining sound and coordinated. I would love to see her fully open up in a larger ring. A very complete, impressive bitch who pushed extremely hard for 1st in a strong AVNSC class which could honestly have rivalled many a Group in quality.

3. Dunn’s RIVER EKI BALARDA AT MULLACABOO (IMP POL), Great Swiss Mountain Dog - Very promising, substantial 9 month old dog with a strong masculine head and alert expression. Broad, flat skull, moderate stop, strong muzzle and dark, almond-shaped eyes. Strong, muscular neck into particularly well-constructed forequarters, with long, well-laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Well-developed forechest, broad deep chest, strong bone and compact feet. Well developed through the body for his age, well muscled throughout and presented in super condition. AV WORKING VETERAN DOG (3,1)

1. Hearton’s BLIZZARDRUN STRYDER AT TALLATANTA, Siberian Husky - 7 year old black and white dog, masculine, foxy head with almond-shaped eyes and well-set ears, contributing to a mischievous, alert expression. Pleasing general outline with balanced angulation, although I would prefer a little more length of body. Good slope to pasterns and excellent compact, oval feet. In good coat, just approaching a coat change, and still holding a lovely fox-brush tail. On the move, could show greater firmness and drive from the rear but thoroughly enjoying himself.

2. Whittaker & Wolfe’s DREAMWOLVES JUST A LIL CRUSH, Alaskan Malamute - 7 year old substantial seal and white dog. Broad head with small triangular ears, although I would prefer a shallower stop. Good depth of body with approximately equal depth of chest and length of leg. Moderately and reasonably balanced angulation fore and aft, with straight, well-boned forelegs and good-sized compact feet. Good croup and well-set, well-furred tail. Enjoying his day, and on the move could be more coordinated, but appeared to be moving a little narrow behind today.
