I would like to thank the Committee for the invitation to judge at their show and for looking after me so well throughout the weekend. From the moment I arrived to camp the evening before, I was made to feel incredibly welcome. It was particularly lovely to see the children so enthusiastically involved in setting up the showground, and I thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour provided.  

My thanks also go to my steward, whose help kept the ring running smoothly throughout the day, and to everyone involved behind the scenes who made the appointment such an enjoyable one. The show is held in a beautiful location and, although we had a very hot and windy day to contend with, the warmth and friendliness of everyone involved made for a thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere. Thank you, finally, to all the exhibitors who brought their dogs under me and gave me such an enjoyable day’s judging.

BRIARD POSTGRADUATE (1,0)

1. Rack’s X'WALTER DES ETOILES TAQUINANTES (IMP BEL) - 20-month-old male of lovely breed type, supple, muscular and well proportioned. Correctly constructed head, composed of two equal rectangles, with a strong square muzzle and clearly defined stop. Dark brown eyes giving an intelligent, gentle expression. Good length of strong neck flowing smoothly into well laid shoulders. Firm, level topline, good depth of chest and balanced fore and hind angulation with a pleasing bend of stifle. Correct double dew claws, scissor bite, long slightly wavy coat of correct texture, and two apparently normal testicles fully descended. Particularly impressive in profile movement, showing the lovely smooth, supple, ground-covering action I was looking for with plenty of drive. A little less settled behind on the out and back today, but a very appealing young male and a lovely exhibit.

POSTGRADUATE (1,0)

1. Cronin's NORSTRELA BUTTERFLY - 5 year old white and red bitch of good proportions, well balanced throughout, presenting a pleasing feminine outline. Broad, well-proportioned wedge-shaped head with muzzle of moderate length, tapering towards the nose. Widely spaced, obliquely set eyes. Short, thick, well-furred ears. Short, thick neck. Good lay of shoulder with balanced angulation fore and aft and good bend of stifle. Adequate bone with good depth and spring of rib, firm topline and strong, well-shaped feet. Good harsh coat, which I would not wish any longer, carries a nice mane. Moved with a pleasing side profile and nice reach, clean and parallel fore and aft, although she could be a little firmer behind on the out and back.

1. McKinlay's IR CH CARLOTTA DI SAVOIA (IMP ITA) - 4 year old black and white bitch of excellent breed type, feminine yet strong and clearly constructed for work. Lovely proportions and beautifully balanced angulation fore and aft, giving the best overall outline in the class. Particularly pleasing broad, wedge-shaped head with excellent short, thick, triangular, well-furred ears with slightly rounded tips. Short, thick, muscular neck leading into well-laid shoulders, straight forelegs and large, almost round, well arched, well-furred feet. Well-muscled hindquarters with good turn of stifle. Absolutely sound on the move in all directions, moving with an efficient, powerful and purposeful gait and covering the ground well. BOB.

2. Atkins' IR CH QIMUGTA HARPIST - A quality 7 year old black and white bitch of excellent breed type, feminine yet strong and very well proportioned. Lovely typical head with good strength while retaining femininity. Short, strong, muscular neck, well-laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Balanced hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Rear pasterns vertical and strong. Deep, well-developed chest, with moderately sprung ribs. Level back, well muscled throughout, with only slight tuck up. Good dense, harsh coat with plenty of undercoat. Another very soundly constructed bitch, but not quite as positive or driving on the move today and appeared to be feeling the heat. Two super bitches who could readily change places on another day. RBOB.

1. Harrison's ZEFATHER'S PRETTY WOMAN TO JASNETTDANES - Very promising 10 month old fawn bitch, strongly yet elegantly built and presenting a beautifully balanced, feminine outline. Excellent head for her age and the best in the class; long and clean with flat skull, decided brow without abrupt stop, well-chiselled face and broad foreface of good depth. Particularly liked her clean underline of head, squarely hanging lips and absence of excess loose skin. Lovely long, clean, well-arched neck flowing into well-sloped shoulders. Very well balanced in her angulation fore and aft, with straight forelegs and good flat bone. Good depth of body for age, strong topline and well-developed hindquarters with good turn of stifle and low-set hocks. Correct croup and tail set. Short, sleek fawn coat with attractive dark shading to head. The best mover in the class, lithe, free and ground-covering with excellent balance, reach and drive, holding her topline on the move. A quality young bitch whose overall balance, soundness and movement carried her through to BOB, BPIB.

2. Wright & Cranfield's ZEFATHER'S HOMEWARD BOUND WITH IRIEUSDANE - Litter sister to 1st, another very promising 10 month old bitch in development still, this time brindle, with a pleasing feminine outline and much to like. Long foreface with dark eyes and high set ears folded forward and lying close to the cheek; would prefer cleaner, more parallel head planes and a little less looseness of lip. Particularly well constructed through the front, with well-laid shoulders and excellent return of upper arm placing the elbows well beneath her; for me the best front angulation in the class. Straight forelegs with good flat bone, good depth of chest for age and well-angulated hindquarters. Moved soundly enough but tended to lift rather than reach in front and was a little loose behind; should tighten with maturity. A quality youngster who was unfortunate to meet her litter sister in such good form. Withdrawn from RBOB competition.

1. Wright & Cranfield's ZEFATHER'S TWO FACES WITH IRIEUSDANE JW - 19 month old fawn male of lovely overall proportions, presenting a balanced, elegant outline. Pleasing head with good length, broad deep muzzle, pronounced median furrow. Correctly set ears. Dark eyes, although showing a little haw. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, with a good chest developing with plenty of depth and length of rib, strong topline.  Well balanced angulation fore and aft, straight forelegs with good flat bone. Would not wish any more slope to pasterns. Cat-like feet with well arched toes. Still very much an adolescent and not yet fully together on the move; inclined to turn his elbows out and was particularly loose behind on the day. I would hope to see him strengthen and gain greater stability as he muscles up and matures. A quality young male with much to like standing. Withdrawn from RBOB competition.
