I was honoured to be invited to judge both English and Irish Setters at this show, and was pleased to be presented with good numbers of very high quality entrants despite the particularly inclement winter weather that had been affecting much of the country. My grateful thanks also go to my stewards for keeping everything going smoothly.

ENGLISH SETTER

PUPPY (5 entries of which 3 absent)

1 McDowell's BYEDALES AGATHA CHRISTIE A superb OB bitch, almost a year old. Supremely confident on the move despite a slippery surface, moving soundly and with drive and completely owned the ring. Good angulation fore and aft with nice tight paws, a tail set nicely in line with the back and a wonderful kind gentle expression with dark eyes. Excellent depth of chest and good bone, a very nicely put together girl on a strong well muscled frame. Presented in very good coat, a real head turner. She should have a very bright future ahead of her. I was very pleased to award not only BP but also BOB.

2 Stead's BONGATE MISS MELODRAMATIC OF SETTAVISTA An attractive but somewhat raw BB bitch who was determined to give her handler a hard time today and was a bit jumpy under my hands, also unsettled on the move, but all of this will come in time. Benefits from an appealing expression, nice tail set, well off for bone with good angulation, nice paws and correct tail set. Plenty of time to grow in confidence and settle.

JUNIOR (4/2)

1 Forrest's ELVISTAR FALLING IN LOVE A nice 15m tricolor bitch with good substance, nice good movement on the slippy surface. Well muscled with good bend of stifle, well angled shoulders that are laid back nicely and presented in good coat. Kind appealing expression with dark eye. Another lovely dog who I am confident will do will in future and I will enjoy watching her. Would have been RBOB had a rosette been available at this show.

1 Forrest's ELVISTAR FALLING IN LOVE

2 Stead's RAVENSETT ILLUSIONIST OF SETTAVISTA Nearly 2yo BB dog. Sound movement, but today not quite as much drive and less settled than 1. Good bone, tail set, and typical masculine head. Well angled on well laid back shoulders, with good bend of stifle. Other than movement, little to choose from compared to 1. Another day on a different surface might change the result.

1 Forrest's ELVISTAR PRIVATE DANCER 3yo BB bitch, in good body, well off for bone, well angled fore and aft, good bend of stifle, correct tail with good depth of chest. Half sister to RBOB and it shows. Very similar in comportment. Kind expression with dark eye. Confident movement.

2 Smith's LARA FROM VALJEVO GREEN FIELDS OF MEADOWRUSH (IMP SRB) INT JCR 3 1/2 years bitch, very different to 1 - more of a working type, short coupled with a kind expression, broad throughout with a square somewhat heavy head, well muscled but could benefit from carrying less weight and having more coat. Moved with less freedom than 1 - possibly the surface making her look a little stiff.

IRISH SETTER

PUPPY (1/0)

1 Holehan-Green, Green and Selby's LOGANRISH WINTER PEARL MOON 10 month old bitch, well off for bone, sweet kind expression on feminine head with nice chiselled features and good stop. Anglulation good fore and aft, tight paws, low set ears, overall well muscled. Sound confident movement on the go with good drive and balance on a slippery surface. Very attractive overall package and should have a good future. BP.

JUNIOR (3/0)

1 Hemmings' ORLANSET SLAVE TO LOVE A lovely 17 month old dog, with the handsome attributes of the breed well on show: chiselled features, low set ears, nice tail set in line with the back. Good movement on tight paws. Broad across the shoulder with good angulation throughout - presents attractive maturity for his age.

2 Hemmings' ORLANSET ANGEL EYES 17 month bitch, sister to 1 with very little to choose from between them. Typical head with a kind expression, tight paws with good toes, good tail set, good angles fore and aft. Displaying equivalent maturity to 1, however with marginally less confidence on the slippery surface.

POST GRADUATE (4/2)

1 Holehan's LOGANRISH TIGER LILLY PEARL JW 2 1/2 year old bitch with confident balanced movement, good bone tight paws, typical kind features of the breed. Tail set well in line with the back, good angulation front and rear, ears set low, nice dark eye and good layback of shoulders.

2 Gilks' SUTERESETT MR MISTOFFELEES AT GOCHMAWR 6 year old dog, well presented in good coat with typical masculine face, tail set on well, nice tight paws, good angulation and bend of stifle, over-strode on movement resulting in a less confident sideways gait on this occasion.

1 Holehan's LOGANRISH TIGER WARRIOR JW 2 1/2 year old dog of excellent substance and maturity, presented in good coat and body. Nice kind expression typical of the breed, well angulated front and rear on nice tight paws with good muscle throughout, resulting in superbly confident true movement with pride, poise, drive and without any hint of trouble with the slippery surface which which really made him stand out among a high quality entry overall. Very pleased to award BOB.

OPEN DOG (3/1)

1 Green's LOGANRISH OUT ON THE TOWN JW A nice 3 3/4 year old dog of good substance. Well off for bone and with good angles front and back with nice bend of stifle, tail set on nicely in line with the back. Presented in good coat and showing the typical racy outline of the breed. Not perfectly settled on the surface but did enough to edge first place. Settled much better for the challenge and would have won RBOB had a rosette been available at this show.

2. Cohen's LYNWOOD MERRY MAY KING WITH SHUSHANA A 6 1/2 year old dog, good substance, even if marginally less than 1, handsome face with nice dark eye good angulation. Tail set on well, less settled on the move than 1, but very little to choose from between them.
