Cardiff Canine Society

Cardiff CS Premier Open Show 25/1/26

Judge: Averil Cawthera-Purdy

I thoroughly enjoyed judging Cardiff Canine Society’s well organised Premier Open Show. The venue being cold was expected and so dressing warmly helped and was more than compensated for by the warmth of the Welsh committee and exhibitors throughout the day. My thanks to the group judges for sending through some lovely dogs for me to make my final selection from. My thanks also to my steward who ran the ring both efficiently and cheerfully throughout the day.

For BIS I had quality dogs to select from but catching my eye particularly were the Pastoral, Working and Hound winners. The Afghan on the move had to be considered but wasn’t giving his all in stance. Which left me my most difficult decision of the day! In the final analysis the Hungarian Puli, Thomas’ Chesmes Kutya Magyar Gryff at Mournebrake took BIS. He drew my eye and continued to impress more and more. He is so beautifully balanced throughout, square, nicely angulated and with excellent head properties. He has breed typical brisk, accurate movement, holding his shape well throughout. His corded coat is presented to advantage and he was giving his all for his handler.  RBIS and pushing hard all the way, the Russian Black Terrier, Williams’ Evrussky Black Widow (AI). An excellent example of this stunning breed, so strong and with such substance, yet retaining all her femininity. Beautifully constructed and moving out with power, precision, reach and drive to prove it. Presented and handled beautifully.

The puppies were also of high quality and will give their owners some exciting times as they grow up. The Border Terrier caught my eye but my choice had to be between the Peke and the Lhasa, two stunning puppies! They gve my my second hardest decision of the day. BPIS went to the Pekingese, Shaw, Mee & Ransome’s Pekehuis Dream Maker. Well named. At 8 mths he has everything you would want in abundance. Large broad, flat skull with good underjaw. A lustrous dark, round eye. Excellent firm body with good waist and lovely rib. So sound and moving correctly with both roll and purpose. Well coated with correct texture. BTP BP RBOB.  RBPIS the Lhasa Apso Barnett & Carter’s Alamiks So Macho. A very handsome young man with a most attractive headpiece. Soundly constructed, with good proportions. Moving well from all angles with reach and drive. Pushed hard all the way.

Best Veteran again a lovely selection of top quality exhibits to choose from but it had to be the Standard Smooth Dachshund, Stark’s Ch Adnerbs Won Vision of Gobannium JW OSW. Impressive hound, loved everything about her. Strong topline, excellent quarters and hocks and a lovely refinement in head and expression. Moving out with both precision and strength.

Toy Group

1. Scott’s Cotton De Tulear, Mopseyscoton Minti Minki Quality exhibit who belies his age. His head proportions are good as is his pigmentation. He has a correct topline, tail carriage and a good coat of the correct texture. Well put together with good muscle to his hindquarters and moving out strongly in all directions. TG1 BTV BAVNSC Toy

2. Shaw, Mee & Ransome’s Pekeingese, Pekehuis Hyperion. 2yrs Nothing overdone, the more you look the more you like and under hands he is even better. Everything exactly where it should be and what it should be. Correct for size and with plenty of substance. His head is wide and shallow giving that perfect envelope shape. He has passed his excellent dark, round lustrous eyes on to his son. So good on the move. His son will trouble him soon but today he had enough. BOB TG2

3. Smeath’s IG, Bytheiad Fair Guinevere at Willingwisp. Taking the freezing cold temperatures in her stride this well balanced feminine bitch of nice size refused to be overlooked. Liked her head and expression. Well set ears, compact body and strong hindquarters, moved soundly.

4. Williams’ CKCS, Charnell The Renegade Sancana. Blenheim Quality boy, with excellent head qualities and lovely expression. Well laid back shoulder with correct angulation on rear. Sound mover. Correct coat well presented. BOB.
