MINIATURE PINSCHER 

Both delighted and honoured to have been invited to judge Miniature Pinschers at the SMPC show. Despite the weather gods trying to throw everything at us, the show went really well. I loved every moment of it and when one judges such an incredibly charismatic breed, the day does turn into a complete joy! The entry was amazing and it gave me a chance to learn so much more about the breed. My thanks to my two stewards who kept things flowing and spent time retrieving paperwork which was being blown all over the showground. The atmosphere in and outside the ring was good. I enjoyed myself and hope the exhibitors did as well; they all accepted decisions so graciously. The quality of the dogs was very good; type varied a little and I felt some were carrying a little too much weight. The breed standard states that elbows should be close to the body, this was not the case in a few cases; some skulls could be a little flatter, and eyes a tad less prominent and ears a little smaller (the breed standard says ‘as small as possible’). Having not judged the breed before, other than in variety classes, it was a steep learning curve for me but super fun! I was not completely surprised that some exhibitors do agility, so much spark in a such small frame. MPD (4). Super to see such a large MPD class, it is very promising for the breed’s future. 1.Chapman’s Vickstock Boogie Nights - 7-month-old but already displaying many positive breed points. He is very well balanced and compact; short-coupled. His eyes are a very good shape; ears well set and carried; front legs straight; chest needs to develop and drop. Lovely ‘typy’ puppy. I shall watch his progress with interest. 2. Hind’s Diamoneo The Prince - As with my class winner, this 8-month-old is well balanced when viewed side-on; his expression is quite breed typical; his skull is flat and eye shape is good; mouth is correct; tail well set and carried. Super front action not so strong at the rear at the moment. I would like to see him when he is a little older. 3. Hind’s Diamoneo One Step Beyond. PD (1). 1. Stephens’ Brightmeadow Bill The Kid - 9-month-old with so much maturing to do. He is well balanced and quite compact in construction, but his topline could be a little stronger; his head is good and his dentition is good. When moving he is a little wide in front, but his rear action is lovely and very strong. Time will be a good friend. JD (1). 1. Stephens’ Brightmeadow Billy The Kid. ND (1). 1. Stracey’s Krieger’s Oor Bryan - Very much a ‘baby’. He is well balanced; his head proportions are good; back is of sufficient length; neck has enough arch; fore chest needs to develop as do his hindquarters, which I feel sure could happen as he matures. Tail set is good. PGD (2). 1. Allan’s Allanabru Red Alert - 4-year-old, incredibly strong in construction; plenty of muscle throughout. Side-on, he is sturdily constructed. Viewed head-on, he is very broad in chest, this could be a function of muscle as his front angulation is good. Rear action provides lots of drive but front not fully breed typical. He has a very masculine head but not overdone in any way. 2. Wilson’sKilmuir Quarterflash - He is a nice dog but not keen to be gone over so quite difficult to assess his construction with my hands. However, on the move, he is super so I feel safe in saying that his construction must be good. Perhaps I will get another chance in the future to go over him. L (2). 1. Giannitti’s Killmuir Kyiv At Aftershine - The head of this 4-year-old is a tad different to what I am used to encountering in the ring, in that his skull is not flat when viewed from the front. However, there is a lot of dog between the head and tail, and his overall construction is very good. He is strongly built and fairly compact in outline; his topline is good; chest of enough depth, front and rear angulation is good, and this all contributes to his lovely movement. 2. Allan’s Allanabru Simply Red At Wishsong - I prefer the head of this male to my class winner, but his topline is not as strong as my 1st place. He is compact in build, and his neck is strong as are his forequarters and hindquarters. Movement coming and going is quite good, but his topline is a little disappointing when viewed going around the ring. OD (3). Quite a difficult class to judge and my initial choice was not what I ended up with. There was much I liked about my 3rd place but, in the end, I preferred the front action of my 2nd. 1.James’ Ch Jaegerson The Edge - What a cracker! 3-year-old; fully mature; incredibly masculine and still very smart and incredibly well constructed. His balance is spot on; very square in outline, good length of back; sufficient tuck-up; super head with a typical breed expression; excellent mouth; plenty of fore chest, elbows close to the body; hindquarters are very well muscled. He moves so well. He is difficult to fault. BD BIS. 2. Urwin’s Jaegerson Kingsman - Only 18-months-old but looking well matured. He reminds me a little of my class winner. He is gracefully built, nothing coarse about him but he is still very strong; his front is excellent and he has a breed typical outline; his mouth is correct; neck is strong and he moves with enough drive. There is a lot to like about this young boy. 3. Mitchell’s Ch Alcum Tee Rex. VD (4,1). It was incredibly difficult to accept that these dogs are veterans; they are in excellent condition. All credit to their caring owners. 1. Reddington’s Kaypin Voulez Vous - 7-year-old and he’s as sturdy, well balanced and well-muscled as many a young dog. He is a joy to go over as he is incredibly well constructed, and his muscle mass is excellent. His outline is textbook for me and his masculine expression is what I want from this breed. His tail set and carriage are very good and his movement in all directions is quite faultless. Lovely male! RBIS, BBD, BVIS. 2. James’ Ch Jaegerson Dress To Impress JW - A tad older than my class winner at 8.5 years, and again in superb condition. His head is of good proportions, creating a keen expression; neck is of good length. Side-on, he looks a little long when stacked and his outline is not quite as good as my class winner. Movement coming towards me is very good. 3.Pyefinch’s Kilmuir Quantum Leap. VNTGD (1). 1. Wilson’s Nianka Hungry Eyes - 14 -year-old and beautifully constructed; his overall balance is good; he is sufficiently compact for the breed; coupling is as it should be. His head proportions are not quite right but this could be a function of his age. His movement is still positive, and his muscles are still quite strong. A delight to go over such a lovely but not so young boy! MPB (5). As I said for my MPD class, it is reassuring for the future of the breed to see so many new puppies around. 1. Hind’s Diamoneo Wings Of A Dove - Nearly 9-month-old, very pretty, feminine bitch. For one so young, her outline is fabulous, being compact and square with no weakness in the topline. Her ears are well placed and a good shape; her mouth is good and her neckline is graceful, shoulders are well placed. Her movement is spot on with desirable hackneyed action. I shall watch her progress with interest. BPB, BPIS. 2.Pyefinch’s Kaypin Bizzy Lizzy - 3 months younger than my class winner which is a lot in a puppy this age and thus she is so much less mature, a true ‘baby’. She is compactly built and short coupled; her head is narrow; mouth is good; her front is broad enough for her age and hindquarters are parallel. As with my 1st place, I would like to see her when she has matured. 3. Heately-Fitzsimmons’s Hawksflight Who’s That Girl. PB (1).1.Stephens’ Brightmeadow I See Red - The proportions of this 9-month-old puppy are quite good, but I suspect she may be carrying a little extra weight for her frame. Going over her, she feels a tad ‘chunky’. Her topline is straight and strong and is already quite well muscled; her elbows are close to her body, but she still stands wide and front movement will need time to develop; rear movement is good as is her rear angulation. JB (1). 1. Stephens’ Brightmeadow I See Red. NB (1). 1. Heatley-Fitzsimmons’s Hawksflight Who’s That Girl - My 3rd place in MPB but looking far better than she did in that class, in fact almost a different dog. She is very feminine and quite smart for her young age; very compactly built; super head and expression. Her front is very good but rear needs to develop a tiny bit more. She is nice; it all needs to ‘come together’ and I think she will look super when finished. LB(3). 1. Allan’s Kilmuir Krasa To Elanaux - This 4-year-old bitch has a lovely shape throughout with nothing exaggerated. She is quite sturdy with back to loin ratio being good; head length and expression are good; neck has sufficient arch and leads well into shoulders. Her front legs are quite straight, but her upper arm is a little short and this has slight effect on her front action when coming towards me. Her action around the ring is good and she holds her topline on the move. Really like her RBB. 2.Allan’s Allanabru Petite Petale - There is plenty of muscle on this bitch and not surprising as I believe she does agility; she is solidly built and her front construction is excellent with moderate angulation and super straight legs; head proportions are breed typical and her expression is keen; feet fore are excellent but back feet are a tad long and could do with being a little more cat-like; hindquarters a little over angulated and this affects the drive a little; front reach is excellent. 3.Wilson’s Kilmuir Quaint She Ain’t At Nianka. OB (4). 1.. James’ Jaegerson Centerfold - At nearly 2-year-old, this bitch has an outline unmatched by the bitches so far today. She is what I want when judging this breed, excellent balance, compact without being cobby, strongly built; her expression is fearless and her temperament typical for this breed; head shape is good; eyes oval, mouth correct; forequarters are strong with sufficient depth of chest; hindquarters are muscular. To be picky, I prefer the shape of her front feet to her back feet. Very good pigmentation. Overall, a lovely bitch.BB. 2.Mitchell’s Alcum Suzzie Que - As with my class winner, this 4-year-old has many breed positive points. She is strongly built but appearing quite ‘delicate’ when viewed side-on. Skull is quite narrow; eyes are of good shape; topline and angulation are good; tail set is as I would expect. Overall, an honest bitch. 3.Urwin’s Vickstock Wow Aneeva. VB (3,1). 1.McLean’s Happy Stacyland Jennifer IKC - Nearly 10-year-old and carrying a tad too much weight perhaps but her frame is solid. Her head is super feminine but with a strong muzzle. Her body is sturdy but because of her age, she has lost some of her tuck-up and her ribs look a bit barreled; her topline however is good; and her outline is square; angulation is good and apart from carrying a little extra weight, there is nothing overdone about her. BVB. 2. Allan’s Allanbru Rose Tico JW - Strongly built 9-year-old which I find well-constructed when going over; her balance, proportions, angulation and muscle are good and she stands quite square. Unfortunately, her movement is difficult to assess today. VNTGB (3,2). 1. Allan’s Allanbru Strictly Tangoed - Unbelievably, 12- years- old with some wonderful breed positive points. She has the most stunning outline and is quite compact when stacked, she has a strong topline which she holds on the move. Her tail set and carriage are good; her head is good and the shape of her feet are excellent. A joy to go over.
