Aberystwyth and District Canine Society Monday 4th May 2026  

Many thanks to this hard working team for the invite to judge at your show for the initial 17 breeds and was more than happy to help with all the other added breeds and classes through the day. An entry of over 120 dogs plus the two groups kept me busy and also explains why these critiques have taken a while.  

A day for me of many first judging of some breeds, so thank you for your patience and understanding. Special thanks for the Utility exhibitors  

Thank also to my main steward Alan for keeping it going as books were falling apart and changed to orders, and all the other stewards that assisted through the day, to those that kept me topped up with coffee.   

Samoyed 

Class 285 Puppy Dog or Bitch (1 entry / 0 Absent) 

1st Ashbourne, Mr & Mrs PH & A, Angelicus Furnando 

A promising 10 month old dog, displaying many of the qualities expected for this age. Masculine head, sweet Samoyed expression, outline is balanced, with correct angulation fore and hind, coat is of the harsh texture and well presented. Moved well in the ring today.

A feminine bitch of 11 years old belaying her age with a headset, neat well placed ears, and expressive eyes. Good movement with sound action with correct fore and hind angulation, she maintains a steady, confident gait. Happy to see her do so well for BViS later in the day

A young bitch of 9 months showing good development, pleasing overall proportions with a correct square outline, balanced angulation, and a feminine head with a lovely expression and dark pigmentation. Carrying good bone without heaviness, stands straight in front with elbows held close, couplings are short, and her tail is well set. Moved well holding a level topline.

1st Williams, Mr M & Mrs J, Laakso Kaunis at Akritiko 

A nice feminine 21 month old bitch who has quality. Good headset and expression, with classic eyes and ears, a level topline, strong short loin, and good ribbing. On the move she is sound, true, and free striding, maintaining her outline. Would have like a bit more drive in the ring.

A sound 2 1/3 year old bitch, her overall construction is good, with an excellent front, strong topline, and well set, well carried tail. Good headset, kind dark eye, good forehand construction, excellent topline, and well balanced quarters. She moves well out and back with a pleasing stride in profile, creating balanced movement around the ring.

1st Flower, Mrs S, Serenlas She’s on Trend 

A young sable bitch of just over 7 months with balanced proportions and a correct outline, showing good construction for her age. A feminine looking good length of head, a well placed stop, and sufficient fill of muzzle and underjaw. Her dark, eye contributes to a nice expression. Fore and hind angulation are correct, producing a balanced silhouette Stands on good feet with a moderate turn of stifle, on the move she went well around the ring.

1st Ransome & Ransome Mr J, Mr A, Serenlas Dream Maker 

A 14 month old sable bitch, displaying good head proportions with a dark eye and pleasing expression, has good shoulder and upper arm, good hind angulation. Her bone is appropriate for her size, and she stands on good feet. On the move she is sound with a balanced side gait with pleasing reach. Good coat and handled well. Has time on her side to mature in stature.

A 20 month old bitch with a pretty, well balanced head, nice expression and eye shape, well set ears. Her cords are well defined and well presented, overall body shape is correct with a good tail set and a coat of good length that is nicely corded. Moved well today giving her the edge. Well made that will get better with age and maturity.

2nd Gracie, Ms M, Mournebrake Dear Prudance 

A bitch of nearly 3 now, well balanced, and feminine, good breed type. Correct overall angulation, and free moving action. She has a pleasing, head with typical proportions and an expressive dark eye. On the move she is sound but would have liked more drive today, coat could have more cord formation.  

Class 278 Open Dog or Bitch (3 entries / 1 absent) 

1st Thomas, Miss H, Chesmes Kutya Magyar Gryff at Mournebrake 

Almost 4 year old dog who stood out for his balance, maturity, and overall correctness. Showing a lovely head and expression with dark, appealing eye. His neck is of correct length, flowing into a well laid shoulder. In well toned condition, his movement was the best today, demonstrating soundness and accuracy from all angles, his handler got the most out of him. His cords were beautifully formed and well presented.

2nd Gracie, Ms M, Mournebrake Pretty Little Angle Eyes at Celebros 

4 and 1/3 year old bitch with less overall substance than the dog. Has a good head and eye, correct front assembly, and a lovely overall body shape, a quality bitch with notable strengths, particularly in coat presentation, could have moved better around the ring today.

1st Merrells, A, Swanndale Antony 

4 ½ year old dog overall Lancashire type with a typical head, good ear, and expression. He was unsettled on the table on the move but overall, his movement was ok. Hard to assess his rear drive but on another day when he is more settled this may change.

A slightly older dog at 5 ½ presented in reasonable condition. He shows fine for his age and moves steadily and willingly around the ring, giving an edge today. He retains a balanced outline with correct proportions. His head is pleasing, with a gentle expression.

Nearly 3 years old, feminine bitch, standing alone today but standing out with her quality. A well balanced outline, head is well proportioned with correct planes, well set eyes, and neat ears. Well built with a firm, level back, strong loin, and well muscled hindquarters. Her movement and action is free and unhurried, driving from the rear with good reach and coordination. She covers the ground effortlessly, demonstrating the steady, ground covering gait with good coordination. Watching her take RBiS later confirmed how good she is. 20 month old bitch presents a balanced, and well balanced Stands natural and could show herself, fore and hind quarters well angulated, head is feminine, well proportioned, and correctly shaped, with a moderate stop, dark well set eyes, alert expression. Moderate spring of rib, a slight slope to the croup, and a correct tail set. Good strong movement around the ring with reach and drive, covering the ground with ease. reach and drive.

3 ½ year old bitch, another with great breed type and balance, outline with correct proportions. Feminine head and expression, nice headset with dark, well shaped eyes that give her a kind, alert expression. Coat is correct in texture, complementing her substance and overall quality. Topline remains firm on the move, and she has a strong, efficient move that covers the ground well with reach and drive. A tough choice between these two today 

3rd Williams, Mrs A, Misoro Prodigal Son

1st Reakes, Mrs P, Viszlanyia Varur with Thrihyrne JW 

A nearly 4 years old male with a masculine outline, strong muscular build, the rich russet gold coat gives him the distinguished appearance. Overall balance and clean lines create an impression of athleticism and refinement. Headset and expression are true to the standard, moderate stop, and a lean, robust muzzle, deep brown eyes. Movement was light, ground covering balanced and efficient, with strong drive. Coat and colour are good features.

2 ½ old bitch, rich russet coat, and a feminine, nicely proportioned outline. She carries a well shaped, headset with a lovely eye. A strong, arched neck of good length, flowing into a body that is short coupled with a nice depth of chest. Topline is firm, with a neat tuck up and a well angled rear featuring low‑set hocks. On the move, she is sound and moved well, reflecting her correct construction.

1st Evans & Lloyd-Jones, Miss G, Clonageera Honey Honey at Blodaugoch 

Just over 2 year old bitch shown in good condition, well-muscled, coat well prepared. A classic outline, with pleasing depth of chest and overall balance, headset and expression showing a kind, feminine head, well-proportioned, with dark, expressive eyes. Good bone, tight, well-arched feet, and a firm, gently sloping topline. Ground covering movement, flowing gait that carried her above the 2nd today but could see these two swapping places.

A 3 year old feminine bitch, lovely eye and expression, and her headset with correct planes. Well developed ribs, and strong loin, well balanced body. Topline is strong and well held on stack and in moving, showing drive around the ring. Tough choice between these two today.

1st Richards, Mrs M, Redclyst Captain Kidd 

A 4 ½ year old dog, pleasing overall shape, showing good outline when standing. Long, lean head with a lovely expression, headset gives a masculine yet refined appearance. He shows a good length of neck flowing cleanly into well placed shoulders, and he carries a deep chest that gives him scope. Fore and hind sound angulation, giving him the requirements for effective drive around the ring. Movement today gave him the edge over the 2nd place dog.

A 7 ½ year old dog belaying his age, of classic outline. Balanced and racy but carrying that essential air of elegance. Good headset well proportioned, kind, intelligent expression, and correctly set ears. Clean, flowing neck leading into well placed shoulders, and he maintains a firm, level topline both standing and on the move. On the move he covers the ground with an effortless, rhythmic stride, just preferred the first placed movement in the ring today.

1st McGrory, Miss G, Javal Same Old Scene 

A 9 month old bitch, at the typical rangy stage of development. Presents a lean, feminine head with correct planes and a clearly defined occiput, giving her the classic expression. Straight fore quarters with compact feet, and her topline is true and well held, fair good depth for her age, with ribbing that will develop as she matures. Movement was a little erratic at first but settled to show glimpses of reach and drive. She does have a lovely ring presence already. Hope to see her again once she matures a little more.

A 4 year old bitch, she shows correct headset proportions, with an equal muzzle to skull ratio and of good length supported by a well shaped skull. Good muscle tone throughout, topline which she maintained consistently on the move. Her movement was true and steady, giving her the edge in the class.

A 16 month old dog, well balanced of substance, presenting a solid and strong outline, standing on well boned legs with strong, well muscled quarters. ln action, maintaining his outline and demonstrating sound construction. A good head with divergent planes, giving balance and breed expression. Movement was good if a little lively in the ring.

1st Falberg & Buckley, Miss A Mr D, Tolosa Tallegio 

A 3 year old dog presented in very good condition. Good headset, with well‑placed ears, a lovely soft expression, shows good bone throughout, with strong oval bone contributing to his overall strength and substance. Correct fore and hind angulations with good large, round front feet. Carrying a firm topline, with good chest proportions, good spring of rib, supporting a square outline. Moving he was sound coming and going, with a balanced, efficient side gait both strength and reach.

A 6 year old bitch that belies her age, a lovely headset and soft, typical expression, her orange roan colouring stood out. Nicely put together throughout, with good bone and tight feet, and shows well muscled hindquarters with correct rear angulation, allowing her good movement but preferred the 1st movement today.

At just over 2 years old this masculine dog was standing alone today, balanced headset with correct proportions and a soft expression. He has a good length of neck flowing into well angulated shoulders, supporting a clean, level topline, rich red and white coat is of good quality. A balanced profile, and a well bodied frame contributed to his overall appeal, and he moved well around the ring.

This bitch of just 6 months old, nice headset developing well, with a fairly harsh coat, ease spannable. Movement was there in places and can see soundness developing

Another young 6 month old bitch, with a nice headset, lighter in bones than the first, she has time to develop. Not as confidant on the table or on the move as the first but would say coming along nicely.

At only 13 months old this bitch has a feminine otter head, with dark eye and keen expression, ease of spanning, coat in a good harsh condition, moved confidently with drive around the ring.

Another bitch of 19 months, she has a pleasing feminine outline which is essentials for the breed, body well filled out. Pleasing movement with reach and drive giving her a strong presence as she moved around the ring.

An 18 month old dog showing great maturity, presenting with a good shape and size, good masculine head, short, strong muzzle, firm level topline, and good harsh coat, well balanced throughout, with adequate bone, a narrow front as required, movement was free and confident.

An older dog than 1st heading toward 6 years, dark grizzle and tan dog of good type, good bite, strong muzzle, neat ears, and a nice flat skull, all contributing to a good headset. Firm topline, flowing into a well set tail, and he was shown in good harsh topcoat with a thick pelt. Balanced dog who moved freely, covering the ground with ease and confidence.

1st Marshallsay, Mrs L, Fergustaff Kraken 

Just 9 months old but had something about him as he entered the ring, well balanced and already showing breed type. Has brindle patch over the eyes, masculine head of correct proportions, ears are correctly placed and well carried, and his dark, nice, shaped eyes give him a good headset. Neck flowing cleanly into his topline, well put together overall, good fore and hind angulation giving a lovely outline, both standing and on the move. Once settled, he moves well, showing freedom and balance around the ring today.

A 7 month old dog, that as his exhibitor said, “bit of a pudding brain today”, lots to like about him, strong developing headset, nice substance in body, a little bit excitable on the table and ground but loving his day out. Move in places well, with glimpses of typical jauntiness.

1st Thompson & Pentecost, Ms A Mr H, Oakfayre’s Whiplash Weasel JW 

A 3 year old bitch, lovely compact white bitch, good quality, gorgeous headset, feminine, with dark eyes, well set ears, and a kind alert expression. Good reach of neck, straight front, neat feet, angulations fore and hind give her a good outline. Movement is smooth with power and drive. Unlucky to come up against my BoB today.

A 3 year old fawn and white bitch, headset nice with strong underjaw, and dark eyes that contribute to a good expression. Her fore quarters are neat, with tight cat feet and solid, round bone, spring of rib and great depth of body, all giving a compact, powerful outline. Shown in good muscular condition just was not showing the best of drive and movement in the ring like the 1st place was today.

1st Fallon, Mrs A, Snowmeadow Uncle Ugo at Croffysofty 

7 month old dog, compact, well balanced, carrying nicely textured light coat, falling in loose waves. Showing developing fore and hind angulation, a nice reach of neck, and a level topline leading to a well set tail, all over good muscle tone for his age. Held a level topline and showing freedom and balance on the move just a little erratic around the ring but should settle with maturity.

An 18 month old bitch, showing nice overall balance, quality, and classic outline, a feminine head with dark pigmentation, flat skull, parallel planes, nice expression, eyes of good shape and colour, and her ears are well set, giving a nice overall headset. Balanced throughout the body and good angulations giving her good reach and drive around the ring keeping level topline. Coat in good condition, with correct texture and colour.

A 22 month old bitch of pleasing type for her balanced, compact, and unexaggerated outline. Coat of correct colour and texture, falling in loose waves and presented well. She is feminine, nice headset with neat, well set ears, hazel eyes, straight forelegs, good bone, and neat feet, well sprung ribs, and maintaining a level topline both standing and on the move. She was a little erratic on the move today.

An 11 month old black brindle dog, strong in headset, expressive eyes, with good width of chest, well balanced, clean outline with a firm topline, and good bone throughout. Movement is sound and purposeful, maintaining his level topline and carrying himself with confidence and ease.

A 21 month old black dog showing a little brindle, nice clean outline held both standing and on the move. A pleasing masculine headset, with good length and a keen, dark eye. Coat is harsh, dense, enhancing his balance, a firm level topline, with a deep chest. Movement is clean and true, maintaining his topline confidently around the ring.

Coming up to 3 years old nice shape and size, presenting a balanced outline and confident movement both standing and around the ring. A masculine headset with good skull width, developed cheeks, dark eyes and well set ears. Well boned without excess, standing on a straight front with good bone, shown in good coat and muscular condition. His hindquarters are strong and well muscled, driving him forward with purpose.  

2nd Thomas & Griffiths, Mr G & Mrs C, Skyestaff Truest Desire for Gazstaff 

A black brindle 3 year old bitch of nice size and balance, presenting a clean outline and overall, well balanced structure. Headset with full cheeks, well set rose ears, and a keen expression, fore quarters are straight with good bone, stands over strong rear quarters and maintains a firm topline when settled. Was a little bit mischievous with her handler today, but you could see the quality in places.

Approaching 5 years old but not showing it, strong and being shown in excellent condition. Headset is well constructed, masculine, with correct proportions, a distinct stop, dark round eyes, neat ears. Broad neck leading into a wide set front with good fore chest and depth of brisket, supported by well boned legs, well sprung ribs, hind quarters are well angulated with well let down hocks, giving him ease and fluency on the move, holding a level topline throughout the movement.

A black brindle dog of 7.5 years old, picture of balance and still in superb condition, headset is a powerful, well proportioned with a broad skull, defined stop, square muzzle, large nostrils, dark, round eyes, neat rose ears. Shoulders flowing cleanly into a straight, well boned fore quarter to tight feet, and strong pasterns, neck is strong and broad, leading into sufficient rib and brisket. Coat is in good order, enhancing his outline. On the move he provided a challenge to his handler, he is balanced, and true in all directions if a little erratic today.

A 9 year old masculine strongly made dog throughout and clearly still fit for purpose. A pleasing head with a clean mask, neat ears, dark pigmentation, expression is alert. Good front with strong pasterns, straight forelegs, and a level topline that he maintains on the move, coat is well presented, moved around the ring competently.

An attractive 16 month old bitch, very feminine, of correct colour, showing lovely balance, well proportioned headset, soft expression, correctly set ears, a clean neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Presenting a pleasing outline when stacked, with brisket to elbow, ribs extending well back, and a tidy tuck‑up. Good width of chest, well sprung ribs, Hind quarters are good, a well set and carried tail, good bend of stifle, and maintains a level topline when settled. Movement sound, covering the ground with ease and showing drive, with good width behind giving her the edge over her sister today.

A 16 month old very similar in many ways to her sister, silver grey bitch of refined, feminine type, presenting a pleasing outline when stacked, headset balanced with grey nose, and bright, round eyes of a colour well matched to her coat, correct ear set and length frame a soft, sweet expression, neck is clean and moderately long, straight forelegs with adequate bone for her frame, and well developed chest, nice spring of rib, giving her an elegant, balanced silhouette. On the move maintained strong, level topline and good drive. Can see these two swapping places regularly.

Approaching 3 years old bitch of the same breeding as bitches in graduate class, a refined, feminine outline with correct head proportions, equal length of muzzle to skull, long, well set ears, alert expression, neck is clean and moderately long, flowing smoothly into a well placed point of shoulder and well angulated forehand. Showing good strength through the loin, allowing her to maintain a level topline both stacked and on the move covering the ring with ease.

A deep chest with good spring of rib, extending well back. Her topline is level, leading to a slightly sloping croup and a correctly set tail. Moved well in the ring.

A 2 ¼ year old bitch in fawn and white, good outline, showing plenty of bone and a strong, compact frame, solid, low set outline with a muscular neck of moderate length, short back, well rounded ribcage. Headset powerful, with correct proportions, a broad flat skull, moderate stop, almond shaped eye, ears set level with the eye. Stands with good width in front, straight forelegs, strong pasterns, and firm, compact feet. Movement coming and going, with natural bulldog roll.

At just 9 months old this bitch had something about her as she came into the ring, square in outline and sturdily built, pleasing headset, dark eyes, and good ears, coat harsh, shown in great condition. Moved well around the ring balanced and good drive.

An 18 month old dog, black coated, headset expressive, dark eye, ears would have liked them a little higher set, body balanced with good proportions, good bone, depth and sprung ribs, matching angulations fore and hind, a hard, well presented coat and furnishings, move well, pushed well today, just preferred the overall package of 1st.

Slightly older dog of nearly 1, white dog, smaller in size then the first but well made, nice headset well set eyes and ears, not as positive on the move as the first today which saw him miss out.

 8 month old apricot dog, of good overall balance providing a pleasing profile. Coat again could have been in a better condition, he is still being a puppy so could only gauge on some of his movement but that was in places sound and light, would like to see more drive.

A 14 month old dog, presented in good coat, well prepared which enhancing his clean outline. A nice headset, well balanced and not too broad over skull, alert expression. On the move he was the best in class, purposeful, and fluid, covering the ground with ease and giving the impression he was enjoying his show day. Think he will mature into a fine dog.

Standing alone an 8 month old masculine dog, showing excellent balance and developing maturity, lovely headset long, fine head with close hanging ears, eyes dark, correct skull shape, moderate stop, give him the classic look. Standing with straight forelegs with tight feet, developing deep chest, sprung ribs, fore and hind angulations giving him the power and drive. Was handled and presented well, his coat was in good condition, trimmed well. Movement showed reach and drive, maintaining balance and purpose.

A 13 month old bitch with feminine outline, headset is good chiselled, with a clean, balanced skull, tight lips, ears set close, dark eye that gives her an intelligent expression. Correct length of neck flowing smoothly into good shoulders, with elbows tight in, a straight front, body is square, compact, well sprung ribs, good angulations giving her the power and balance required.  

2nd Elson, Mrs J, Volgarus Make a Choice at Jomarnelli 

Another feminine bitch of 18 months old, good balance, pleasing outline, square and compact, with a level topline, short coupling, good spring of rib. Headset moderate stop, dark almond shaped eyes, ears are set low and close. Fore and hind quarters well angulated giving her power and drive on the move around the ring. A tough decision for me between these two today.

A well made 3 year old dog, masculine, clean outline, and good overall balance. Headset is attractive and correctly proportioned, dark, well set eye, expression is alert and intelligent, carrying adequate bone and substance while maintaining correct breed elegance. Straight forelegs, tight elbows, and good feet, a level topline, and is short coupled, giving him a nice silhouette. Hind angulation is strong and well made, allowing good stride with reach and drive, in good condition, his coat is of lovely texture, well prepared, confident, and steady in the ring. Gave my BoB a good challenge today.

A 2.5 year old dog, square, well proportioned, presenting a clean outline and strong presence without coarseness. Headset is lean and well shaped, with an attractive eye and alert expression. Straight forelegs, showing good depth of chest, well sprung ribs, firm topline. Angulation is moderate, with low‑set hocks, giving him a light, free action, move freely and sound but preferred the movement of my 1st place dog.

A dog of 3.5 years old lovely moving on entering the ring who immediately impresses with his action, showing excellent reach and drive just on the warmup lap, a very good showman. He is an upstanding, masculine, not overdone, presenting a balanced outline. His headset is long and fine, lovely eye giving an expressive intelligence, neck flows cleanly into a good front, supported by a deep chest and strong bone. Coat and presentation are excellent, which set him above the others today, and he was shown to advantage by his handler. Movement is beautifully free and light, with good drive while holding his shape around the ring effortlessly. Went on to take UGr1 and then BiS.

Headset is lovely, feminine with character, with clean, dark oval eyes that give a soft but intelligent expression. Maintaining a nice, level topline and a balanced outline that belays her age. Her body condition is still good, she moved well, showing the characteristic light, effortless action of the breed.
