English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) Club

The English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) Club Show March 2026

Judge Jack Wood

I would like to thank The English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) Club for their invitation to judge this prestigious club show. I would also like to thank every single one of the exhibitors who entered under me on this day. It was a pleasure to judge your dogs. I would also like to give my many thanks to my stewards on the day who made sure it all ran smoothly. As a breed of my own I have always thought judging English Toy Terriers has been very challenging considering the varied sizes, shapes and differences in types, and as a breeder/judge myself I always strive to breed good top lines and correct conformation needed for an English Toy Terrier to move akin to an extended trot . Today I was pleased that I found several like this in my entry. On a different note, and nothing taken away from the entry today, I was slightly disappointed as a judge that when awarding my Reserve Dog and Reserve Bitch there were no rosettes provided. For many exhibitors this is a big honour and I believe this is something the club may think of providing at future shows.

Baby Puppy Dog - 3 Entries 0 Absent

Such an exciting class to judge yet always so difficult when assessing a baby puppy. You can never see the full picture when they are still so young and have a lot of learning to do. However, it is all good practice!

1 Dowson Dowson Ramsden and Kazgi’s Pallisandre Vegas Lights

A very promising youngster who is certainly on the ‘up’ end of the size scale already, but, is very in proportion. He presents the most super long narrow wedge shaped head with superb eyes which are almond shaped. His ears are well set highly on the back of his skull. On the stack he presents that typical ETT outline with a good gentle curve on the move. He powered around the ring presenting a good resemblance of the extended trot. A very promising exhibit.

2 Pendlebury’s Ettology Stand And Deliver

Another promising baby puppy although not as shapely as 1, he once again has many key attributes that the Breed Standard calls for. Head long and narrow and wedge like shape, eyes small and dark with ears set well upon back of skull. Correct scissor bite and good markings. Like 1, on going around the ring he presented good sound movement with a good resemblance to the extended trot.

3 Dean-Armitt’s Etruria I Say

Baby Puppy Bitch - 3 Entries 0 Absent

1 Pendlebury’s Lasagesse A Kind of Magic of Pendlethrine

Another promising baby puppy who presents the ideal ETT silhouette on the stack. She has the sweetest of natures and has a proper wicked expression. Dark almond shape of eye, head wedge shaped but would prefer more length. On the move she powered round the ring and kept her shape at all times. At times she could march more than trot but I am sure this will settle with age.

2 Ramsden & Kazgi’s Pallisandre Time to Dance

Another youngster showing promise. Not as shapely as 1 and she is a lot narrower throughout but she is still yet young. She has a lovely long narrow wedge shaped head and wicked dark eyes. On the move she is still very babyish but did show signs of an extended trot. One that I would call a slow burner.

1 Partington-Palmer & Palmer’s Winsome Flames Aussie Gold (Imp Swe)

Promising young male only just out of puppy. He is developing well and has many things to like. He is steadily built and very capable of doing a days work in the rat pit. I absolutely loved his attitude. He was keen to please his owner. Good long narrow head with super scissor bite and well arched neck leading to well laid shoulders and a strong straight front. Well defined thumbprints. On the stack he presents a good shape but on the move he does tend to lose this, but, he still moves round the ring showing a good sign of extended trot. Another very promising exhibit!

Post Graduate Dog 2 Entries 1 Absent

1 Pendlebury’s Ettology Small Gods of Pendlethrine

This young dog immediately appeals for his size and shape. Still young yet promising, he has a good wedge shaped head which could be a fraction longer. He has the most wicked expression and super dark almond shaped eyes. On the move he was true coming and going but in profile I would prefer more reach in front.

Limit Dog 4 Entries 1 Absent

A class headed by both my Best Dog and Reserve Best Dog. On the day both these males could easily have swapped places. With so much to like, they are both so true to type and superb examples of the breed.

1 Conway & Oakden’s Spawood Hey Mickey

The moment I turned round from the judging table this dog was already stacked in the ring and instantly appealed. He presents a most typical ETT silhouette, topline gently curving with good fall over croup. His tail is set well and carried low, all things to be admired and upon assessing him on the table I found he has the most marvellous wedge shaped head, with ears set well upon the back of the skull. Ideal almond shaped eyes, correct scissor bite with a well arched neck. His shoulders are well laid back, his front straight and lovely well defined thumbprints. On the move he is so true and in profilehe shows a good extended trot. BEST DOG, BEST OPPOSITE SEX, RESERVE BEST IN SHOW

2 Pevy & Leonard’s Witchstone Won’t Be Silent by Richpin

Another super example of the breed and one I have admired from ringside many times. Like 1 he immediately appeals for his overall shape and size. He is super shapely and has the ideal fall over croup. He presents a well shaped wedge head with good dark eye. He has good strong fore and hind quarters. He is superbly short coupled and could easily turn on a sixpence to dispatch a rat. Another lovely exhibit presenting a low set tail. On the move, once again, you can clearly see that when he sets off to go round the ring that there is a clear resemblance of the extended trot. RESERVE BEST DOG

3 Pendlebury’s Ettology Small Gods of Pendlethrine

Open Dog 4 Entries 1 Absent

Another quality class headed by three males of a similar type.

1 Partington-Palmer & Palmer’s Etruria Hear The Word

Another dog I could have awarded top honours. I loved his classic wedge shaped head paired with superbly high set ears and beady dark little eyes. He has lovely strong jaws and correct scissor bite. A well arched neck and good lay back of shoulder. His tans are slightly paler but you can still see a defined thumbprint. He is another top class male who presents that typical ETT silhouette curving to the croup. He is super sound on the out and back and in profile he powers around the ring showing that typical extended trotting action.

2 Love’s Witchstone Follow The Dream with Tettoy

I judged this dog on my first ETT appointment and was pleased to see he has carried forward many of the attributes I saw on that day! Super balanced wedge shaped head, almond shaped eyes and well set ears. Neck slightly arched and shoulders well placed. Good straight front and well defined thumbprints. Another male who presents a lovely outline on the stack but can tend to flatten off on the move. He is sound as a pound on the out and back. In profile I would prefer a touch more reach but another who could easily take top honours!

3 Wines Etruria Say The Word

Veteran Dog – 4 Entries 1 Absent

1 Francis & Blatchford’s CH Witchstone Not Apache On Mefor Peopleton VW

This dog is just magnificent and one who has had an illustrious show career. Still capable of taking top honours. As my notes say his movement is just breathtaking. If there was a dog to study movement then look no further. Well shaped long narrow wedge, small almond eyes and great shaped candle flame ears. Neck well arched leading into well laid back shoulders. Topline gently curving, tail set low and carried well. Ideal fall over croup. Tidy out and back and in his profile his footfall is something to be admired.

2 Forsythe’s CH Witchstone Raindance avec Richpin VW

Another dog who has so much to like. He is shorter in leg than 1 with a more masculine head. He is sturdy throughout and excellent in topline. Strong straight front with correct thumbprints, good lay of shoulder with ribs well sprung. Nicely short coupled and another who could easily turn on a sixpence and dispatch any rat! He is superbly sound out and back and in profile shows a good resemblance of the extended trot.

Junior Bitch – 1 Entry

1 Marsden’s Regalriver Big Bad She Wolf

Just out of puppy, another youngster showing great promise. She is what I would call ‘Old School’ type. I just love her head and expression, neatly made wedge and superb candle flame ears. Neck well arched but her chest needs to drop which will allow for better strength in her front legs and shoulder. She is so curvy throughout which really gives her an attractive look stacked and on the move. She could be a touch neater coming towards but that is something that will come with age and maturity.

Post Graduate Bitch – 6 Entries 3 Absent

1 Marsden’s Regalriver Big Bad She Wolf

1st Junior Bitch

2 Attfield’s Grayswish Time Of My Life

Another exhibit who appeals for her shape and size. She is very well schooled and is so at one with her handler. Head wedge shaped and long and narrow. Eyes dark and almond shaped, moderate neck and well laid shoulders. Front straight with well defined thumbprints. She flows from neck to croup with all the right curves in all the right places. On the move she moved well for her handler but did have a tendency to look up at her at times which can spoil her outline.

3 Pendlebury’s Wykewoks Autumnal Sunsetta of Pendlethrine

Limit Bitch – 9 Entries 4 Absent

1 Hall & Oakden’s Spawood Proud Mary with Ghilgrange JW

Litter sister to my Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show she has many of the key attributes he also carries. She is shapely throughout, true to standard and showing finesse and elegance. She has a pretty, long, narrow wedge shaped head and nicely shaped almond eyes and a good strong jaw. I loved that she was so at one with her handler which helped show off her beautiful expression. Elegant well arched neck leading into well laid shoulder. Forelegs straight and thumbprints well defined. Superb well muscled hindquarters with tail set low and carried correctly. On the move she really excelled, flowing around the ring showing off her extended trot! In the challenge she pushed the Best Bitch winner all the way but in the final decision I just preferred the compactness of the Open Bitch. Reserve Best Bitch

2 Green & Leonard’s Three Times a Lady

Another exhibit whom could challenge the best! She presents that typical ETT silhouette. Stood she is well balanced throughout. Head long and narrow, ears set high and used well. Jaws strong forming a correct scissor bite. Neck slightly arched, shoulders well laid back, forelegs straight and thumbprints well defined. She holds her shape at all times when moving and shows off that typical extended trotting action. Once again she really gave 1 a challenge in the class but I just preferred the richer tan of 1.

3 Dean-Armitt’s Twowayshouse Touch of Class

Open Bitch – 8 Entries 4 Absent

1 Green & Leonard’s Lady In Black at Witchstone

Of the saying ‘the one the judge would like to take home’ look no further than this bitch. She immediately screams ETT. Her typical silhouette is something to be admired. She is just coming into her prime and she has much to offer. Head wedge shaped and long and narrow, ears candle flame shaped and set high and used well. Strong jaws forming a perfect scissor bite. She has a real wicked expression demanding your attention! Her neck has the most wonderful arch which flows superbly onto well laid back shoulders. Her forelegs are straight and thumbprints well defined. I just love how fine and elegant she is throughout. Her tans are really rich which really appeals to me and is something the breed has lacked in recent years. Her topline is just textbook and her fall over her croup is something that cannot be ignored. Finishing off the complete picture when stood was her well set low tail which she carries in the ideal position at all times. On the move she again tookthings one step further by owning the ring and showing that true extended trotting action with such beautiful footfall. I have added in my notes that she is a credit to her owner. Her overall condition is something quite amazing. The shortest of nails, short harsh glossy black coat. Not one thing out of place. One whom I believe is made to make it. Best Bitch and Best in Show.

2 Inch’s Edalene Court And Spark JW ShCEx OSW

Another quality exhibit. She presented a lovely wedge shaped head which is long and narrow and paired with dark almond shaped eyes and fabulous candle flame ears. Jaws strong and neck well arched flowing into well made forequarters. I would prefer slightly richer tans and more definition of thumbprints, but they are there if you look closely. Another who presents a lovely silhouette stacked with topline gently curving, she has a moderate bend of stifle and superb muscle tone. Tail is set low and carried well. On the move she shows real freedom and presents a clean flowing movement into a textbook free stand.

3 Love’s Whole Lotta Love with Tettoy

Veteran Bitch – 4 Entries 2 Absent

1 Inch’s Edalene Never Let Me Go VW

A quality veteran, not showing her age one bit and still out there demanding to be looked at. Well made wedge shaped head and almond shaped eyes. Large well set candle flame ears and strong jaws. Her shoulders are well laid back and forelegs straight. Well sprung ribs, short loin and good fall over croup. She moved soundly out and back and showed off well in profile.

2 Kirton’s Wykewoks Serenity Success

Another veteran who should be admired for still performing at this age for her handler. Starting to show her age now but still presenting many key breed attributes. Head wedge shaped, eyes dark and almond shaped. Neck arched and forelegs straight. Thumbprints have run and she is flatter in topline than 1 but still flowing around the ring showing off to her best for her handler, and, almost every time moves into a perfect free stand!

1 Marsden’s Regalriver Big Bad She Wolf

1st Junior Bitch.

2 Pendlebury’s Wykewoks Autumnal Sunsetta of Pendlethrine

A pretty bitch, she has a good wedge shaped head with dark almond eyes. She appeals for size and is very well schooled showing well for her handler. Forequarters are well angulated, topline gently curving and tail set low. I would prefer more angulation of her hindquarters. Sound out and back and holding her shape at all times whilst moving.
