Torquay & District Canine Society

Breed: Beagle

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Torquay & District Canine Society for the kind invitation to judge the Hound breeds. My gratitude also goes to the committee for their warm hospitality, the venue for providing an excellent lunch, and to my efficient steward, Tracey Hill, who ensured the ring ran smoothly throughout the day. I was very pleased with the overall quality of the entries and would like to thank all exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me. While I did not encounter any significant faults, I did feel that the general movement of some Beagles and Dachshunds could have been improved. However, I was generally delighted with the high standard presented.

Beagle:

PG (4,1) 1 BREEZE’S, PARKEBREEWAY BUCKLE BUNNY, 8-month-old B, A lovely puppy of pleasing general appearance showing good balance and quality. She has a good head and slightly domed skull with correct proportions and expression. Forequarters developing well, with sufficient bone and substance for age. Topline not yet fully firm and level, which is understandable at this stage of development, but she presents a compact body with good depth. Movement was good for a puppy, showing freedom and positive drive, and she held her outline well on the move. Promising youngster who should strengthen as she matures. RBOB & BPIB. Amazing to see this youngster go on to take HPG3, well done! 2 ADEY’S, BOSKENNA ENCHANTED AT RUBEUSBAY, 14-month-old B, A good general appearance with correct Beagle type. Slightly heavier set than the winner but still balanced and sturdy. She has a pleasing head and skull with good expression, and a nice level topline which she maintained in profile. Body shows good depth and spring of rib. Moved soundly with positive action, and on the day stood out from the rest of the class for overall steadiness. O (2,0) 1 QUANTICK’S, PARKEBREEWAY RUMOUR JW, 2 year old D, A good overall Beagle of correct type and balance. I preferred his head and skull, showing correct proportions with a pleasing expression and good eye. Strong neck into well laid shoulders and straight forelegs with nice tight, firm feet. Body compact with good depth and substance for size. Movement was lovely in profile, holding his back level and showing long reach in front; rear action was a little stiff today but he remained true and balanced. A nice size dog who presented a quality overall picture. BOB. 2 SCARLETT’S, VANITONIA ENCHANTED OVER MICHELROY JW, 2 year old B, A merry hound who presented a pleasing outline and good Beagle character. Nice head and expression with correct proportions. Good body with depth to elbow and a level topline which she maintained on the move. Moved well with positive action and good drive, covering the ground with typical Beagle gait.
