Torquay & District Canine Society

Breed: Dachshund (Smooth Haired)

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Torquay & District Canine Society for the kind invitation to judge the Hound breeds. My gratitude also goes to the committee for their warm hospitality, the venue for providing an excellent lunch, and to my efficient steward, Tracey Hill, who ensured the ring ran smoothly throughout the day. I was very pleased with the overall quality of the entries and would like to thank all exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me. While I did not encounter any significant faults, I did feel that the general movement of some Beagles and Dachshunds could have been improved. However, I was generally delighted with the high standard presented.

Dachshund (Smooth Haired):

SY (0,0). PG (6,1) 1 RYCROFT’S, FANTASTIC FRANK AT TRISENSARA JW, 3 year old SHADED RED D, A dog of pleasing general appearance showing correct Standard Smooth type and balance. Lovely head and skull, long and tapering with good expression. Strong neck flowing into well laid shoulders and good forequarters with sufficient bone. Moderately long in proportion to height with enough ground clearance and withers and quarters of approximately the same height, giving a balanced outline. Topline held well on the move. I would have preferred slightly more angulation in the hindquarters to complete the picture, but he moved with a lovely free and flowing gait, showing good reach and drive. RBOB. 2 ASHBY’S, RAAJPUT’S CANADIAN WINTER WITH WAKYWILKS, 3 year old BLACK & TAN B, An overall very pleasing bitch of correct type and substance. Nice neck running into good forequarters and well developed body. Slightly longer in outline but still moderately long in proportion to height and balanced without exaggeration. Good hindquarters and strong pelvis set correctly. Moved well with positive action, maintaining her topline. A very difficult decision between first and second on the day. O (3,0) 1 RYCROFT’S, CHIDAX SAHARA SAND BY TRISENSARA JW, 2 year old SHADED RED B,

A really pleasing exhibit with excellent general appearance and true Standard Smooth type. Lovely head and skull, long and tapering with correct slight arch and very pleasing eye. Strong neck running cleanly into well laid shoulders and good forequarters. Moderately long in proportion to height with sufficient ground clearance and withers and quarters of approximately the same height, giving a balanced outline without exaggeration. Hindquarters strong and well developed. Moved with a free, flowing gait, showing reach in front and good drive from behind while maintaining a level topline. BOB. 2 RYCROFT’S, JACKSONDAX HORNET HURRAH AT TRISENSARA JW ShCEx OSW, 4 year old BLACK & TAN D, A good general appearance with correct strength and substance. Strong forequarters and well developed forelegs with prominent breastbone as required by the standard. Nice topline blending smoothly from withers into loin. Clean outline and moderately long in proportion to height, maintaining good balance and sufficient ground clearance. Presented a sound and functional picture on the day.
