Cornwall Gundog Club

Cornwall Gundog Premier Open Show

My sincerest thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at your show and to my stewards Debbie and Sarah for keeping the ring running smoothly. For me, the overall atmosphere and camaraderie on show throughout the day is what makes our hobby such a pleasure to be involved in. A special mention for the late Joy Baguley. I had only ever corresponded with Joy via email prior to my appointment. Upon being enthusiastically greeted by her on the day, I found her warmth, enthusiasm and passion an absolute breathe of fresh air! Everytime I looked around, she was always somewhere making sure exhibitors felt welcome and keeping a casual (yet watchful) eye on proceedings. I was so saddened to hear of her untimely death not long after the show which I am sure shocked so many of those who knew her. The dog world has definitely lost one of its good ones - thank you for inviting me Joy and for making sure the show ran like clockwork for us all to enjoy!

Benevelo Stella Splendente. Liked this young brown bitch for her overall square shape and balance of angulation. Head is correctly shaped in profile being long and showing divergence with kind eyes and a big nose. Well laid shoulders, good length of leg, excellent bone, plenty of body for age and symmetrical rear angulation. Presented in good coat with thick skin. Moves with an elastic action and a tick-tock tail action. BP & BPIS4.

Scodinzolare Pesche. Liked this orange bitch very much, particularly in head with divergent planes, deep flews and spongy nose. Good angulation fore/aft with a breed typical topline. Moves with a breed-typical action from all angles. Just preferred firmness of 1’s pasterns today.

Lyndyck Imo Grady.

Very easy and ground-covering action on the move. BOB

Tolosa Provolone. Very square orange bitch, ultra-feminine head and expression. Balanced angulation with a breed-typical topline. Presented in good order with thick skin. Moves well from all angles, just a bit unsettled being gone over today.

CURLY COATED RETRIEVER

The quality of this breed entry was excellent, seriously impressed!

GRADUATE (3,1) - Liked both of these for different reasons.

Maycourt I’m Still Standing. Impressive liver dog who is one of the best movers I’ve seen for a long time in this breed. His type, strength and substance in abundance. Masculine head with correct eye colour. Strong neck that flows into a well-made forehand. Excellent spring of rib and strong topline, moderately angled hindquarters with a wide pelvis. Coat needs to develop further but he still has time. His movement is breath-taking! Showing precision going/coming and uses every ounce of himself to cover the ground with style and minimal effort. One to watch but he will be a slow burner, BOS.

Brightmeadow Man Of Steel. Another quality liver from a taller mould than 1. Clean-cut wedge shaped head with correct eye colour and well-sized ear leathers. Reachy neck into a well-made forehand. Strong bone and compact feet. Plenty of leg but still has a deep brisket and well sprung ribs. More rear angulation than 1 but possesses wide thighs and short hocks. In excellent coat. Needs to tighten up on the move but, like the winner, he is only young so has time on his side.

LIMIT (1,0)

Maycourt Cover Shot. Ultra-typy liver bitch who ticked all the boxes for me today. She has quality, type and balance in abundance! Loved her clean, wedge-shaped head with the prettiest expression and correctly set ears. Strong neck into excellent forehand with well-boned limbs and neat feet. Excellent big ribcage with a firm topline and underline. Moderate rear angulation with firm hocks and a wide pelvis. Presented in first class order, her body is covered in tight curls. Moves accurately going/coming and covers the ground well in profile lashing her tail. Simply loved her and can see her going all the way, pleased to award her BOB & RBIS!

OPEN (2,0)

Maycourt Take Me To The Top JW. Another quality one from this kennel. This black bitch excels in type, shape and balance. Beautiful head and eye, her neck seamlessly flows into a well-made forehand with straight, well-boned limbs and tight feet. Excellent spring of rib with a super flow from her withers to her tailset and firm underline. Absolutely spot on for rear angulation. She too is a grand mover, keeping her outline and using her tail well. I had to really nit-pick in the challenge and just felt her coat wasn’t quite as full as 1 today. Another destined for her title I think, RBOB.

Maycourt Heartbreaker ShCEx. An upstanding black dog with the same stamp of quality as 1. Liked his strength of bone and body throughout. Typical head and eye, strong neck with well laid shoulders, plenty of leg underneath him. Deep brisket with well sprung ribs and firm topline. Correct rear angulation. A good mover overall but felt the winner carried herself a little better today. In excellent coat and condition.

LABRADOR RETRIEVER

PUPPY (3,0)

Salvator’s Hot Summer Rossacre. Lots to like about this black bitch. Typical in make and shape with no exaggerations. Her head is feminine with strength through the muzzle and dark eyes. Strong neck that flows into a well-made forehand with good bone and feet. Good length of leg for age. Well-bodied up for a baby with a firm topline, strong loin and symmetrical rear angles. Tail is carried correctly and is thick & well-wrapped. Such a coordinated and easy mover for one so young, most promising. RBOB, BP & RBPIS.

Hampsbeck Tickled Pink. Chocolate bitch with much to commend. Really liked her bone/substance. Feminine head and expression with ears used to advantage. Good forehand assembly overall, would not want her any heavier which has made her topline go a bit soft. Strongly made rear with excellent tail. Moves with enthusiasm and carries herself well.

Cornishwater Wheal Prosper.

JUNIOR (1,0)

Oakhouse Outragious. Quality young chocolate bitch who immediately impressed for her super type, shape and balance of angulation. Excellent head shape in profile, just needing to broaden between the ears with age. Good neck and shoulder with plenty of leg. Good ribbing for age with super strength to her rear and finished with an excellent tail. Needs confidence with being assessed which will in turn help her to relax on the move. I do hope her owner can win her over, she has a lot going for her!

SPECIAL YEARLING (3,2)

Oakhouse Outragious.

GRADUATE (3,2)

Hampsbeck Purple Moon. Pleasing black bitch of good overall type and balance. Correctly proportioned head with good width to skull and dark eyes. Like her balance of angulation and development through the body. Moves soundly in all directions.

POST GRADUATE (3,0)

Rossacre The Duke. Black dog, a lovely, honest sort without exaggeration. Typical head with the kindest expression and dark eyes. Liked his overall body proportions with excellent length of leg. Decent forehand with well-boned limbs, ok feet. Strongly made rear with a thick tail and presented in excellent coat. Very sound, easy mover from all angles while maintaining his shape.

Clarisview Primrose. Yellow bitch, loved her head and eye! Strong neck, preferred the forehand of 1. Excellent topline with a decent tail. Rear has some strength to it. Sound mover from all angles.

Hampsbeck Purple Moon.

LIMIT (5,1)

Lembas Brooklyn at Mibridge. This black is a real stallion of a dog, well off for bone and very well made throughout. Broad through the skull with dark eyes and well sized ears. Correct forehand assembly with good feet. Big spring of rib but felt he could be presented in slightly less heavy body condition. Strong topline, good length of leg. Wide through his rear quarters with strong thighs and hocks. Thick tail used to advantage. A very sound and steady mover all round who maintains his shape. BD/BOS.

Cremino Capability Rossacre. This yellow is quite the contrast in style to 1 but with lots to like about him. Very classic head and kind expression, straight limbs with good width to front. Strong topline, ample leg length and fair rear quarters. Liked his easy movement and clean fore/hind action.

Hampsbeck Scruples.

OPEN DOG (2,0)

Hampsbeck Scruples. A strapping yellow dog with lots of bone/substance. Head is most definitely masculine but would prefer it slightly cleaner. His angulation both/aft is pleasing with maturity through his body. A very enthusiastic mover who uses his tail well.

Carpenny Padraig. A really lovely black, slightly longer and perhaps more angular than 1. Preferred his head and expression overall to the winner. Excellent neck and shoulder, plenty of leg and such wonderful spring of rib. Stands firmly behind and uses his tail well. Unfortunately he gave his handler a hard time on the move despite being given a couple of chances to regain his focus. A great shame, I liked him very much!

OPEN BITCH (5,1)

Menadue Should Be Dancing. This very honest black ticked all the boxes for me today. She may not be the most extrovert but she is all ‘Labrador’ in her make, shape and balance. Beautiful, clean head and eye with broad skull and strong muzzle. Her strong neck seamlessly flows into a well-made forehand with straight strongly boned limbs and the neatest of feet. Correct leg length, deep brisket with well sprung ribs and a strong topline that flows through to her correctly set, thick tail. Wide thighs, good bend of stifle and firm hocks complete the picture. Presented in hard condition and an excellent coat. Steady, true and economical on the move while maintaining her shape. A very comfortable BOB today.

Cornishwater Springtide. Another very appealing black but not quite the leg length of 1. Very typical in head shape with dark eyes and pretty expression. Fair topline with enough underline. Liked her well angulated, strong hindquarters and thick tail. Moved with pace and drive.

Treamble Queen Of Gems.

VETERAN (5,1) - This was such a lovely class to judge, always have a soft spot for the oldies!

Jubliwell Good As Gold. A lovely yellow who is in such good condition for her age. Pleases for type, shape and balance. Captivating head and expression, strong neck and well laid shoulders. Firm topline with strength to her rear and thick, well wrapped tail. Such a good mover, showing the youngsters how it’s done! BV

Rossacre Spangles of Clarisview. Another good yellow who displays a typical shape. Good width to her skull and shape to her eye but just preferred the strength in muzzle of 1. Excellent angles fore/aft with a mature body. Very good all round mover.

Carpenny Halishimoor Delicious (AI).

Decent body for age, just a touch bum high at present to be critical. Wide thighs and firm hocks. Carries herself well on the move with good drive from the rear, using her tail to advantage. Excellent temperament, pleased to award her BP & BPIS3.

His neck flows into a well-made forehand with some forechest. Firm topline, moderately angled rear. Presented in good order, prefer richer red markings personally. Sound mover in all directions, just needs to be a bit more animated.

Amblelight Jasmine at Evangelise. Liked the make and shape of this bitch. Typical head shape in profile, good length of leg, decent bone and feet. Balanced angulation fore/aft with a level topline. Not giving her best on the move today which spoilt her chances.

LIMIT (3,0)

Roxdale Premier Rose. This bitch possesses breed type in spades and the shape/construction to trouble the best. Classic head and kind expression, super neck and forehand with excellent length of leg. Super spring of rib with a level topline and symmetrical hindquarter assembly. She is a sound mover but needs more confidence to show everyone what she is capable of. Really liked her!

Excellent balance of angulation fore/aft, correct length of leg and correct spring of rib. Goes with a smooth and ground-covering action, lashing her tail and holding her head high. She pleased me immensely, I’d personally like her to have richer red markings but you can’t have it all! Delighted to award her BB & BOB.

Amblelight Adhara JW. Made in a different cast to 1 but with lots of appeal. Her head is feminine but with strength through her muzzle. Good neck and forehand, preferred leg length of 1. Good spring of rib with a firm topline. Strongly made rear with wide thighs and firm hocks. Better red markings than the winner, goes with style and uses her tail well.

Benoveor Can’t Buy Me Love. Very similar to 1 in type due to being half siblings. Liked her make and shape overall. Lovely head and expression, plenty of bone and mature through her body. Correct angles fore/aft. Moves with drive and energy, BV.
