BIS
It was an honour to be invited to judge BIS today. The hard working committee ran a tight ship, with the Show Manager keeping all rings on track.
Thank you to my co-judges for sending through such high-quality competitors from their respective Groups, giving me plenty of choice and some thought provoking decisions.
The final line up for BIS consisted of the Gundog Group winner - Flat Coated Retriever – Bellamy’s Sh Ch Moontorn Better Half of Me JW ShCEx OSW, the Hound Group winner – Whippet – Morland’s Ch Zoraden Gossip Girl JW, the Pastoral Group winner – Hungarian Puli – Cowley’s Ch Kashbeluli There We Are Then JW ShCEx OSW, the Terrier Group winner – Smooth Fox Terrier – Brookes’ Zetamaz Maraschino, the Toy Group winner – Bichon Frise – Carr’s Petit Ami’s Countin’ On A Miracle Bowiechons (Imp Nor), the Utility group winner – Miniature Schnauzer – Parker, Saunders & McDonald’s Risepark First Stage JW and the Working Group winner – Leonberger – Simmonds’ Skjaergaardens Dance Monkey Dance JW (Imp Nor).
After assessing these excellent representatives of their breeds and groups, I awarded BIS to the Whippet who was a joy to go over with her gently flowing curves, calm & collected, and moving paw perfectly with her daisy-cutting action around the ring with such presence. She is correct in size, oozes femininity & charm & creates the perfect breed silhouette.
Reserve went to the Bichon Frise, animated & showing such character, whilst underneath the immaculately presented coat she fulfilled all the desired breed attributes and structural requisites to enable her to move with style and purpose. She carries herself so well on the move with her plume proudly held & totally knows she is a princess. A fuller critique is under her class results.
BPIS
Once again, I was spoilt for choice with these truly promising youngsters. Understandably, it can be a long and tiring day for puppies who do not always manage to show their best at the end of the day, but these all pulled out the stops to show their socks off. Representing the Gundog Group – Cocker Spaniel – Stokes-Harrell’s Chezza Marnier Crush, the Hound Group– Rhodesian Ridgeback – Barker’s Delianzia She’s Timeless, the Pastoral Group– OES – Allwood’s Ladamis Lady Liberty, the Terrier Group– Smooth Fox Terrier – Brookes’ Zetamaz Candy Man, the Toy Group– Pomeranian – Boyes’ Poshdonpoms Dream Maker, the Utility group– Lhasa Apso – Hattrell’s Valento Mystique at Khinjan and the Working Group– Siberian Husky – Taylor & Taylor-Morris’ Winter Melody I'll Just Sit And look Cute at Pelenrise (Imp Pol).
The Siberian Husky turned out to be a popular winner of BPIS. An eleven month old bitch, full of confidence, moving straight & true with a brisk action, & she just commanded the ring. Weatherproof coat, straight forelegs, well ribbed back. Caught my eye when entering the ring initially & held my attention. Handled so well, with handler quietly & unobtrusively allowing this Sibe to display her natural deportment.
I selected the Ridgeback for RBPIS. Surprisingly it was the bitches who dominated the top awards today. At only 7 months she is very shapely with everything in the correct proportions. Super carriage on the move, firm at elbow, feminine but with strength. A breed that has no extremes, everything in moderation & topped with the distinguishing ridge.
BVIS
I absolutely adore judging Veterans, most of whom are only just reaching their prime & are still contenders for top honours within their respective breed judging. A credit to their owners for keeping them in tip top condition. For the star-studded line up we were treated to seeing: from the Gundog Group – Pointer – Philo’s Fydal Caprio at Salmonmist JW ShCM OSW ShCEx VW, the Hound Group– Basset – Allchorne’s CH Nelgus Thyme Bomb JW ShCEx, the Pastoral Group– Hungarian Puli – Henshaw-Wood’s CH Magikus Belatrix Black, the Terrier Group– Bedlington – Offer’s CH Woolytop The Wherryman ShCM ShCEx VW, the Toy Group– Coton – Clarke’s Int/Bel/NLD CH Cotonkiss Heaven Help Us NLW23 VW Lux-V, the Utility group– Miniature Schnauzer – Parker, Saunders & McDonald’s CH Silversocks Shot In The Dark with Violis and the Working Group– Siberian Husky – Tinker’s Multi CH Zaltana Kiss My Paws at Lolotea JW ShCEx OSW VW (Imp POL)
The Veterans know their task inside out, borne out by the number of titles adorning their names. What a testament to their breeders and owners in breeding and campaigning them, that many have had illustrious careers at the top of their game from the very start in puppyhood & youth in winning Junior Warrants, then in adulthood with ShCM, ShCEx, and Champion titles, then finishing off with Veteran Warrants. These dogs are not five minute wonders – they have consistently stayed at the top throughout. Dogs can only excel at shows if they have the extra charismatic temperament to shine, which you do not find unless they genuinely enjoy the experience.
BVIS was awarded to the Hungarian Puli – what a dynamo of a girl, showing great energy in her movement as her glamourous but equally functional & protective coat cords swayed around her. She really does pull out all the stops to keep your attention on her. Still on top form, she can trouble the best. Feminine, she combines the breed’s unique functional attributes with the pizaaz needed from a top show dog.
Reserve BIS was taken by the Bedlington – a nine year old male who looked so composed as he trotted around the ring with an air of dignity & sporting his crisp texture coat. But I bet this calm composure would change in an instant if he detected vermin on his home patch & they would not stand a chance.
