Huge thanks to the society for the invitation to judge this lovely well run and well attended open show, their super hospitality and welcome were appreciated. Thanks to my Steward Marian who kept the ring moving along nicely and to the exhibitors who entered and accepted my placings graciously.
English Setter Open
1st & BOB Thomson’s Maursett Morganite for Caspellwynd 4 year old male, full of mischief and enjoying his day. Presented a clean, typical, elegant outline. Lovely head of good length and balance, with classic expression, expressive dark eye and well set ear. Good flews and balanced foreface to skull proportions. Well put together front, good forehand assembly and correct return of upper arm, well boned with tight well padded feet. Strong level topline, correct depth to chest, ribs well sprung and carried well back to strong loin, short coupled. Muscular, well angulated rear balanced with front assembly. Good tail set and carriage. Lovely flat silky coat with good feathering. Moved out freely on a long easy stride, covering the ground well and maintaining balance and outline.
GSP Open
1st, BOB & Grp1 Angus Edelmidpoint Native River Through Calmerell JW 2 year old male in spanking condition. One I’ve admired from the ringside and was delighted to get a chance to get hands on again in a breed class. Classic compact yet masculine outline. Good head with dark eye and good pigment, clean through skull and balanced foreface. Strong neck flows into well laid back shoulder, equal return of upper arm to place legs correctly under body. Depth and spring to ribs carried back to short couplings. Muscular thighs with width to first and second thigh and short hocks. Well boned throughout, neat well padded feet and a well set and carried tail. Flowed round the ring holding a strong topline, on an easy ground covering effortless stride. Never stopped performing to take Group 1.
2nd Wilkinson’s Zarozinia Carn Tuile 15 month bitch who is still maturing and has plenty of time. Good in profile although currently appears a little leggier as brisket still needs to drop a little. Excellent muscle throughout. Pretty head with balance to slightly rounded skull and dark eye and high set ear. Moderate angulation fore and aft. Good spring of rib which goes back to short loin. Enough bone and good feet. Moved out positively although a shade close behind today.
Gordon Setter Open
1st & BOB Miller & Scobie’s Sh Ch Yennadon Calvay JW ShCEx OSW 7 year old male, not the most enthusiastic mover today but truer than the lovely 2 year old placed second. Correct head with good breadth of skull, slightly rounded, and depth of muzzle and flews, strength to underjaw, well set ears and lovely dark, expressive eyes. Correct forehand assembly with plenty of bone and good feet with correct pencilling on the toes. Strong neck flowing into a firm, level topline and a well set tail, although he didn’t make the most of it on the move. Well developed body with correct depth and length, ribs well sprung and carried back to a strong loin. Shown in a super gleaming coat with clean, rich markings, adding to his quality. Moved out straight and true with good reach, although a bit lacking in drive and enthusiasm, although he did liven up in the Veteran class.
2nd Miller’s Cafotaliena Heart of a Hero Liked this 2 year old, a very pleasing youngster. Good in head, neck and shoulders, clean through the throat and front, with good depth to chest and ribs carried well back. Balanced angulation fore and aft. A little lighter in bone than the winner. Presented in a lovely coat with clear markings and good feathering. On the move he maintained his topline well, showing good reach and drive and using his tail to advantage, although just a little wide coming towards.
Pointer Post Graduate
1st & BOB Collins Millpoint Spread Ypur Wings over Vabisbrae 15 month old bitch presenting a pleasing outline. Good enough in head, although I would prefer a little more depth to muzzle and more lip, and she lacked the slight dish which gives the Pointer head its characteristic finish. That said, she presented the more correct overall balance throughout. Strong neck with slight arch flowing into well laid back shoulders, with correct length and return of upper arm and a good prosternum, placing her legs well under her body. Good oval bone with visible sinew. Brisket to elbow. Deep ribs extending well back, giving the correct underline and strong loin. Topline showing the characteristic slight slope from withers to her well set bee sting tail. Well angulated rear with good muscle, balanced with front, allowing for correct movement and making good use of her tail on the move.
2nd Scotland’s Daledancer Victor McDade 2 year old male, an honest sort. Rather broad in skull which detracted from the typical expression, pronounced stop, good ears and flews. Very muscular through neck and shoulders, but not quite the forechest of the winner. Good legs and feet, with a deep chest and long ribs. Higher at the withers, and his muscle development gave the topline at times a broken appearance, although still flowing to a well set tail. Moderate angulation behind with well developed muscular thighs. Moved well.
Open
1st – see post graduate
2nd Collins Raigmore Hermia of Varisbrae Another 15 month old bitch who, although of similar size to the winner, is of a much lighter build. Good in head with slight dish and good flews and lip. Clean through neck and shoulders with enough forechest and return of upper arm. Not the topline of the winner, but well ribbed back to a short, strong loin. Moved soundly but did not have quite the same scope of reach and drive as the first. Would just prefer a bit more bone and substance throughout.
Cocker Spaniel Junior
1st BPIB, BSMPIG, BSMPIS Proudler’s Kimapa Kuromi Karrot 8 month old orange roan bitch full of confidence and showing herself to advantage in the hall today, with a super, happy attitude. Presented a lovely outline in profile. Good to go over with a correct head and expressive eye, good stop, low set ears well covered and a good square muzzle. Clean neck flowing neatly into well laid shoulders, with good return of upper arm placing her well boned, sturdy legs correctly under her. Compact body, deep through the chest with ribs well sprung and carried back to a short strong loin. Good rear with correct rump and a well set and well carried tail, completing the picture. She bustled her way accurately around the ring, moving freely and happily to take BPIB, BSMPIG and ultimately BSMPIS.
2nd Scotland’s Lynwater Bramble Blossom Another orange roan bitch of 10 months who also appealed in outline, although just a touch longer in body and therefore not quite the compact picture of the winner. Presented in good coat and condition, with a good head and neck into well laid shoulders. Correct depth of body with good bone throughout and held her topline well. Not quite as cooperative on the move as the winner today but nevertheless moved out soundly.

Well boned legs and good feet. Held correct topline with a good rear, showing muscle and strength, and moved out well. Handler would benefit from placing his rear legs slightly further back when stacking to ensure the hocks are straight.
