Thank you to the English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) Club for inviting me to judge my own breed for a club to which I am honoured to be vice chairman of. All dogs appeared to be in general sound health with no reported health issues to note. I am also deeply appreciative of all the exhibitors who supported me on my judging career journey to date.

Class A - Special Award Junior Dog / Bitch 

7 Entries – no absentees 

This was a tough class to judge, as all the entries had their faults and merits, and the first three placings could easily have gone either way.

1st – 5 Etruria I Say

A confident 8-month-old dog who stood well on the table and accepted examination without any sign of nervousness. He immediately caught the eye on entering the ring and again in the line-up when stacked by his owner, and continued to draw attention throughout the class. He is well balanced overall and, although I would have preferred a little more curve over the topline, this does not detract from his overall quality. His gentle sweep of back complements a correctly set tail and good tail carriage.

He has lovely dark almond-shaped eyes and a flat skull, though I would prefer his ears to be set slightly higher. His deep chestnut tan is most attractive, with clearly defined thumbprints and pencil lines. He moved freely around the ring and showed commendable maturity for one so young. A promising youngster who should continue to improve with experience. A deserving winner of first place.

2nd – 19 Ettology Stand and Deliver 

A very confident 8-month-old dog who was constantly attentive to his owner, ever ready for his next command. He was alert throughout, with ears and head always engaged with his surroundings. On the table, he presented a most striking deep chestnut coat, dense in appearance and one of his most notable features, with clearly defined thumbprints and pencil lines to each foot.

A cleanly made youngster with a long, narrow head, striking dark eyes, and a correct scissor bite. He has a long neck, well laid shoulders, and carries himself proudly on the move. Once settled, he shows pleasing reach and drive. He needs time to mature and to settle fully on the move, and would benefit from a little more body weight, but when fully developed should enjoy a very promising show career.

Class B – Special Award Post Graduate 

2 Entries 

1st – Graywish Time Of My Life 

An elegant 2½-year-old bitch who stood well on the table. Her tan is slightly paler than preferred, and I would have liked to have seen a narrower front, although she has a pleasing spring of rib. She is very elegant overall, with a lovely wedge-shaped head and well-shaped almond eyes. Her thumbprints are clearly defined, and she shows a visible bow tie on the chest. Although her ears could be set a little higher, this does not detract from the overall quality of the exhibit.

She has a good turn of stifle, well-muscled hindquarters, and a lovely sweep of back, all of which complement her correct tail set and carriage. She covered the ground well on the move and worked nicely for her owner. A deserving winner of first place.

2nd – Galvizach Royal Amethyst Of Regalriver 

A sound and well-balanced four-year-old bitch of good size and proportion, with nicely rounded hindquarters. Although the thumbprints have bled slightly into the forelegs, this may be overlooked in light of her otherwise pleasing markings, including a clearly defined pencil line on each foot and very good break bar markings to the hind legs. I would have preferred a little more curvature from shoulder to loin, but she is nicely cut up. She has a pleasing wedge-shaped head, a flat skull, and a well-set tail carried low, though appearing somewhat shorter than some of the other exhibits on the day. She moved out well for her owner.

Class C - Special Award Open

4 entries – 1 absentee 

1st - 9 Edalene Scoops Ahoy 

A very pleasing 3 year and 9-month-old bitch, slightly pale in tan, but nevertheless attractive to the eye. She has a flat skull and lovely almond-shaped eyes, and on the table presents as a compact and elegant exhibit. She has nicely rounded hindquarters, a good spring of rib, and a well-cut-up loin. Her lovely wedge-shaped head and clearly defined bow tie add to her overall appeal, with pencil lines clearly visible on each foot. I would also comment on her teeth, which were extraordinarily white and in pristine condition for a bitch of this age.

On the move, she was handled precisely to show off her excellent reach and drive. A deserving winner of first place.

2nd – 21 Wykewoks Autumnal Sunsetta of Pendlethrine 

A 1 year 10-month-old bitch whom I have admired for some time. She is of correct size for a bitch English Toy Terrier and, when stood on the table, one can truly appreciate her compact and elegant outline, although I would prefer a slightly less narrow wedge-shaped head and slight more curving of her topline. She has lovely dark almond-shaped eyes, and her chestnut tan is enhanced by clearly defined thumbprints on the forelegs and pencil lines on each foot.

She has already enjoyed a successful show career and has clearly earned the admiration of many judges. On the move, she covers the ground well.
