South Western & Wales Poodle Club Open Show
Thank you so much to the committee for inviting me to judge at this first Open show that’s been held for some time. As a new young judge, I was flattered to get such a good quality entry and had a really special day. Thank you to each and every exhibitor who entered and showed under me for the opportunity to go over your dogs.
POODLE (STANDARD)

Class 2 – Minor Puppy Dog (1 entry)
1st: COOPER, Mrs S & Mr G Amorini Smooch
Taller black 7 month old puppy, still very raw baby. Good front, nice head, good chin, lovely tight feet. Tail set correct but carried over. Needs time, but nice overall type.
Class 3 – Puppy Dog (4 entries) Abs: 1
1st: O’HIGGINS, Miss S Jasenak Royal Whisper at Sarnia (IMP SRB)
Beautiful quality male of a finer type throughout. Lovely head with plenty of foreface, clean back skull, dark almond eyes and a wicked expression. Long, elegant neck, excellent front and chest, well laid shoulders with tight, well knuckled feet. Good rear angulation, well set and carried tail. He gave his handler a hard time and was a little erratic in the challenge but I can see he’s going to mature into something very special.
2nd: MCLOUGHLIN, Mrs K Zantescwtch Pinball Wizard
Very unlucky to come up against my winner! Nice quality puppy of good type, pleasing head with plenty of chin, good spring of rib, lovely feet, correct angulation, moved out well with good drive from the rear.

Class 12 – Puppy Bitch (2 entries) Abs: 1
1st: HESLOP & RICHARDSON, Miss M & Miss A Alisiane As Long As Ur Mine
Elegant young bitch who didn’t put a foot wrong all day! She stacked up nicely, and strode out with so much reach, drive and carriage. Her construction is good, she has a pleasing head, nice almond eye and expression, good chin, ear leathers, lovely spring of rib, well angulated throughout, tail well set and carried, one of the best muscled exhibits of the day, handled to perfection.
Class 13 – Junior Bitch (2 entries)
1st: BARBER, Miss C Larune Break The Spell
Super quality bitch of excellent type, pretty, feminine head, good chin, nice eye, good front, nicely angulated throughout. Just needs to settle on the move to show how well she can reach and drive, I saw glimpses of this but would like to see more as she matures. Would like a little more bodyweight and muscle.
2nd: KERNICK, Mrs P Hope Dreams Come True
Larger apricot bitch of good even colour. Slow maturing type, she has a decent front, nice rib, well angulated rear, well muscled, tight feet, tail well set.

Class 17 - Special Open AOC Than Black Bitch (0 entries)
Class 18 – Special Beginners Bitch (4 entries)
1st: BARBER, Miss C Larune Break The Spell
2nd: JONES, Mr G Ursula’s Song (IKC)
3rd: KERNICK, Mrs P Hope Dreams Come True
Bitch Challenge: BB and BPB 5, RBB 14
Best Bitch and Best Puppy Bitch went to the winner of Puppy and Novice, reserve went to the Open winner. I really liked both of these bitches, obviously one is more mature in body and coat, but the youngster moved with slightly more reach and drive on the day.
BOB challenge:
BOB and PBIB went to the bitch. These two quality exhibits could change places easily; I appreciated the opportunity to compare them both. I know that it’s not an obedience competition, but the dog was so exuberant I was struggling to assess his movement in this challenge, whilst the slightly older bitch gave a steadier, more consistent performance. BSB went to the winner of SBB.

3rd: DILWORTH, Mrs J & Mr T Willow Shadowfall With Guillero
Class 31 – Junior Bitch (7 entries) Abs: 2
This was a very good quality class, the first two could easily change places. Initially I thought the second placed dog would be my winner on overall type, just slightly preferred the drive of the winner.

14 month black bitch. Larger overall type than others, nice chin, eye and length of foreface. Well set ears and leathers, neck of good length. Shoulders laid well with good depth of chest, feet okay. 3 year old black bitch freshly cut out into continental trim. Pretty head, lovely eye and chin. Fabulous ear leathers. Nicely angled front and rear with a good spring of rib. Well set tail, carried over. Moved soundly and handled sympathetically.
2nd: CLARKE, Mrs S Sumania Opal
Finer type throughout, short back, ultra feminine head, well set ears. Matching front and rear angulation, tight feet, tail set correctly and carried well. Appeared to stand on something and go a bit lame. Nice quality bitch who didn’t appear to sparkle today.
Class 35 - Special Open AOC Than Black Bitch (4 entries) Abs: 1
1st: OSBORNE, Mrs L & Mr M Alekontes Delilah Sassy Red
Glorious deep red petite bitch, excellent pigment, very poodly temperament. Front and rear angles good. Would like a little more neck. Good feet. A young bitch who is going to take time to mature and body up. Nicely set tail. Presented well.

Only 17 months and still very immature in body and coat. Beautifully coloured red, from a larger mould than first. Lovely dark eye and pigment with good length of foreface. Well angled rear, correct tail set and carriage. Needs time and more body condition.
3rd: FLETCHER, Mrs J Poornima When Stars Collide Of Wyndruna
Class 36 – Special Beginners Bitch (6 entries) Abs: 1
1st: BIRD, Miss D Minamia Destiny’s Promise At Laderams
Lovely overall quality and type. Very honest bitch. Nice head, clean back skull, good chin. Excellent front and rib; tail set correct but carried over. Positive on the move. I have seen her give her handler a hard time in the past but has really matured recently and was on her A game today.
2nd: SWEET, Miss G Minamia Eternal Destiny
3rd: CLARKE, Mrs S Sumania Opal
Bitch Challenge:
BB and BPB went to my winner of Puppy and Novice; Reserve was the Junior winner. Two nice bitches of completely opposite types, I went for the smaller, shorter bitch on overall type and carriage.
BOB Challenge:
Initially I expected to give BOB to the Open dog winner who is much more of the finished article, however he seemed to tire a little and lose his sparkle in the challenge whilst the Puppy bitch found another gear. I couldn’t deny her BOB through immaturity alone. She was also Best Puppy. There were no Veteran bitches, Best Veteran was the dog winner and Best Special Beginner was the bitch winner.

A solid, well ribbed, cobby bitch with a lovely front, deep chest, nice head with good chin, showed well for her handler.

Totally different type, smaller and balanced much finer throughout. Pretty head, with long ear leathers, plenty of neck, well laid shoulders and angulated rear. I just preferred the overall substance of my winner.

Very pretty black bitch. Fine head, dark almond eyes, good chin, nice front, very elegant in profile. She moved with style and purpose.
2nd: GILBERT, Mrs J Clopton Diamond Jubilee At Portloe
Very nice quality silver, beautiful dense coat of good texture. Deep chest leading to well laid shoulders, nice spring of rib, solid little bitch, just slightly less drive than my winner.
Class 52 – Open Bitch (2 entries) Abs: 1
1st: MAYOU-HOWE, Mrs T Afterglow Nutmeg
Lovely 3 year old brown bitch, excellent even colour. Nice dark eye, short back, strong cobby body, good feet, balanced angulation, really loved her poodly attitude especially on the move.
Class 53 - Special Open AOC Than Black Bitch (5 entries) Abs: 3
1st: MAYOU-HOWE, Mrs T Afterglow Nutmeg
2nd: GILBERT, Mrs J Clopton Diamond Jubilee At Portloe
Class 54 – Special Beginners Bitch (3 entries) Abs: 1
1st: KINSELLA, Mrs J Afterglow Posh Spice
2nd: NUNN, Miss M Persempre Ruya Kapani
Bitch Challenge:
BB and BSBB went to my Junior winner, RBB went to my PG winner. On the day I slightly preferred the carriage of my Junior winner.
BOB Challenge:
I really struggled to separate these two youngsters; I see now that they are from very similar breeding and they are very alike in type. Stacked up the black bitch has marginally more neck, but I went for the apricot dog, mostly for his exquisite expression. Best Veteran went to the bitch, and Best Special Beginners went to the winner of the bitch class.
BIS, RBIS and BPIS/RBPIS:
Unfortunately, my Miniature BOB was otherwise engaged in the Puppy Group at the Champ Show. I spent quite a long time deliberating between the Toy and Standard. I moved them a couple of times, and on balance just couldn’t deny the Standard kept pulling out a bit more each time, while the Toy was a bit distracted on the move. Two beautiful quality exhibits that I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to assess.
BVIS and RBVIB:
I preferred the overall type and attitude of the Toy over the Miniature Veteran: she’s sound, has good carriage and so much personality.
