WELLINGBOROUGH & DISTRICT CANINE SOCIETY OPEN SHOW 25.1.26

Judges critique – Lloyd Cross (Loggeta/Africandawns)

A big thanks to the society for their kind invitation to judge the Hound Group today. I was blessed with a fabulous entry of some top-quality hounds and felt very privileged to be able to go over some fabulous examples of their breeds. Many thanks to those that entered under me on the day & all decisions were taken very sportingly with lots of support and ringside applause for my main winners. Delighted to see my Best of Breed Whippet my choice for Hound Group 1 went on to take Best in Show & my Puppy Group winner, the Rhodesian Ridgeback took reserve Best Puppy in Show. Thanks to the officers and committee for a lovely well organised show, a fabulous lunch and two of the best stewards you could wish for.

I make no apologies for moving my exhibits a lot, I prefer to make a lot of my overall decisions viewing dogs on the move & in free stand when dogs show their true conformation far better than in a stack when any good handler can make an exhibit look better.

WHIPPET

Puppy D/B (4,1)

1. Hunter’s Katiesue’s Attraction at Salatini. A very feminine, elegant 7 months female who caught the eye on entering the ring. Lovely lean head, dark eye and strong jaw on a lovely flowing elegant neck into correct shoulders and a good straight front with quality bone substance. Stood on nice tight feet and had a lovely sweep of keel into a flowing arch of loin and nicely developing broad hindquarters. Stood across a good amount of ground and held a lovely outline both stacked, free standing and on the move. Still has time to develop muscle condition but moved correctly and will no doubt go from strength to strength. A lovely puppy. BPIB

2. Osborne’s Derohan Desert Orchid. 10-month female. Another holding a great outline both on the move and in free stand. Good head, eye and neck. Chest still developing, sound in front, good sweep of keel into rise over the loin. Preferred the stronger movement and action of the winner on the day.

3. Wolfscastle Mr Luva Luva at Hengilfach.

Junior D/B (2,0)

1. Thomas’s Bowdonia Elphaba. Very smart brindle girl of 15 months and really caught my eye, very well balanced overall. Correct shaped head and nick dark oval eye. Good strong jawline into a strong sweeping elegant neck. Good space at the withers and correctly angulated shoulder to upper arm. Elbows nicely tucked in giving a clean line from withers to nice tight, well arched feet and strong pastern. Flowed from deep chest through to broad hindquarters. Moved with purpose having a correct gait. Really liked her outline on the move. Good turn of stifle. Stood well covering good ground on the free stand. I’m sure will do very well going forward. RBOB

2. Trigg & Walton’s Rosalie Beth. A much finer girl of just over a year. Has great promise but needs more time to develop and strengthen. Good head and eye shape. Very feminine but I would like a little more substance. Needs to strengthen to improve hind movement which was correct but a little weak.

Post Graduate D/B (6,1)

1. Blackburns Marzargo Whole Lotta Trouble. A lovely shaped brindle male of 18 months. Correct head and eye, good substance without being course. A well-balanced dog that I preferred to the competition holding a much better outline on the move showing a lovely flowing curving outline. Good power from his hindquarters and well angulated both for and aft. Good feet.

2. Hambling’s Chaseover Bellini. Coming up 3-year female. Very sound and well balanced. Correct front, well angulated shoulders/forearm nice deep chest, well ribbed and moved correctly fore and aft. On the day in the final assessment, I preferred the better flowing outline of the winner.

3. Chant’s Florancy Wild Hawk

Open D/B (5,1)

1. Morland’s Ch. Zoraden Gossip Girl. Stunning, elegant, superbly balanced 2.5 years blue brindle female. Just stood apart from the crowd on the day. The most feminine of head and eye, lovely expression. Superb arched strong neck flowing into a beautiful top and underline. Great depth of chest and super ribbing. Stood across good ground, lovely hind angulation which provided super drive from behind and with a correct cutting action in front, in combination, created the perfect picture for me. Nothing exaggerated but correct throughout with an outstanding outline on the move. BOB, HG1 & Best in Show! Thrilled to bits.

2. Thomas’ Bowdonia Sky Full of Stars. Beautiful name for another lovely girl from this exhibitor. Top quality of a good size and again full of feminine charm. Correct head & nice dark oval eye. Great shoulder/upper arm angulation and nice width, great ribbing carried well back. Lovely flowing curvy lines and good strong hindquarters. Very unlucky to come up against such a stunning winner but really liked her and showed and handled well by a by a breeder owner that obviously has some great stock.

3. Martin’s Bowdonia Go The Distance for Stalwart

GREYHOUND

Puppy (3,2)

1. Estet Classic Sherwood Adventures (Imp Est.). A lovely masculine dog of 11 months. Still coming together as expected in this larger breed however has super outline & greatpotential and I really could see what he will mature into. Good masculine head with very strong jawline, correct dentition. Lovely dark eye and a super expression. Strong sweeping neck into excellent forequarters. Good substance without being coarse. With more maturity and muscle condition will present a beautiful exhibit. Just lacked in strength a little behind but true coming and going away. I wish the owner much success for the future. A lot of fun to be had I predict. Best Puppy & BOB

Post Graduate (2,1)

1. Sadlers Final Quatro. 8-year-old male who undoubtedly had a former life in racing. Lovely head and eye. Good shoulders and good feet. Not the depth of chest or hindquarters of the winner but enjoying himself and showed nicely for his owner. RBOB

AVNSC Hound

Puppy D/B (6,1)

1. Cooper & Cadmore’s Soletrader Golly Miss Molly (PBGV) Super shape & outline on this 9-month girl. Correct head and darkest of eye. Very sound front standing on strong well boned frame. Great feet, good coat & good lay of shoulder into flowing level topline and super angulated hindquarters, in no way overdone – just the right amount of turn of stifle. With such good overall conformation was no surprise to see lovely sound movement, true fore and aft with good drive and reach in front. Cracking outline on the move and in the free stand. Gave her handler a tough time but lovely to see such spirit in exhibits. One for the top I’m sure. Best AVNSC Hound Puppy & Hound Puppy Grp 3 in really top-quality selection.

2. Hills & Hills Rangali Anna with Shimmeree (BFDB) A super sound girl of 7 months. Delightful puppy with great promise. Lovely head and eye, very feminine expression. Good strong neck of good length into well angulated shoulders. Great ribbing and correct flowing topline rising slightly over the loin. Good turn of stifle and well angulated in shoulder & hindquarters. Obviously enjoys her showing and really moved out nicely & correctly fore and aft.

3. Sanders Parker Heart & Soul JP Northern Dancer at Classicus (Imp Jpn) Saluki

Junior D/B (6,4)

1. Sanders Parker Heart & Soul JP Nashwa Classicus (Imp Jpn) Saluki – Super sound and super elegant girl of 10 months. Lovely head and expression, lovely flowing neck into good shoulders and nicely made front. Good depth of keel and decent ribbing. I preferred her hind quarters and overall movement to her brother paced 3rd in the puppy class. IN the challenge for best puppy her slight lack of confidence took its toll. I hope that she gains more confidence as she matures further.

2. Dawson & Goodall Rundle Gambler Beagle – a very masculine and sound dog of just 1 day out of puppy, full of substance and standing on nice tight feet. Liked his front ribbing and topline. Well angulated hindquarters used to advantage on the move. I felt the winner had better balance and I preferred her elegant lines.

Post Graduate D/B (8,3)

1. Reid’s Maudaxi Rebel Diamonds PBGV – 16-month female of correct size and stunning outline. Good head, eye & expression. Really strong neckline and flowed into a lovely topline. Well laid shoulders and standing on nice tight feet on a sound front and well angulated hindquarters. Excelled on the move showing a nice set of pads going away, true both fore and aft. A great handler /exhibit combination showing really well. Best AVNSC & HG4

2. Giles-Wyatt’s Clarismore Crown Prince – Very strong male Beagle of 2.5 yrs. Held a great shape both in the stack and on the move. Good overall construction however not the elegant flowing lines of the winner.

3. Allchorne’s Nelgus Lucky Charm Basset

Open D/B (10,4)

1. Hayes Rangali Yum Nut – Super sound male of 3.5 years – I really loved the overall balance of this dog. Great head and expression into a lovely strong slightly arched neck and a super strong topline over a very well ribbed body. Great body coat although legs could have been left fuller. Good hind angulation and on the move could not be denied his placing in this class. Reserve Best AVNSC Hound

2. Allchorne’s Nelgus Thyme Flies ScCeEx – Super sound Basset of 6 years. Lovely overall construction and good shoulder and hind angulation. Strong ribbing and a lovely topline carried at all times. 2. Rose’ Rozamie Reflection of Rosencrantz – Min Wire Dachshund 10 months female of a correct size. Good head and eye shape, decent neck, good front and shoulders. Good length of ribbing and lay of shoulder. Just needs to strengthen behind at the moment but has a nice overall balance.

1. Hinwoods Adnerbs Sheer Nanagins at Longmel Sd Smooth Dachshund female of 5.5 yrs. A lovely outline on this exhibit held at all times. Sound front, good prosternum, good angulation in the shoulders, tight elbows, tight feet. A lovely flow from the neck through the topline into well-muscled hindquarters providing decent drive.

2. Kay’s Kenzduo Quartz Bright Std Long Dachshund of 3.5 years. A male with very sound construction and great substance. His coat on the day was rather full / fluffy which disguised his outline and made him look stuffy. Just needs to be a little more motivated on the move.

AV Hound Veteran (12, 7)

A class full of top-quality veterans – lovely to judge but made for hard decisions.

1. Allchorne’s Ch. Nelgus Thyme Bomb JW ShCEx – super sound Basset rising 10 years but holding a fantastic outline and lovely flowing hound lines. Particularly liked his head, shoulders lovely ribbing and chunky hindquarters. Such a lovely mover showing real drive behind and holding a super flowing topline, a balanced and lovely hound Best Hound Veteran

Super nuck and topline and lovely strong well-muscled hindquarters providing great drive. Moved as one with her handler holding a super outline on the move and in free stand – should go on to do very well in a very competitive breed.
