Large Munsterlanders

My thanks to the B&DKA Committee for inviting me to judge Large Munsterlanders at their Premier Open Show and to The Large Munsterlander Association (Proposed) for sponsoring the classes. Also my thanks goes to my two Ring Stewards for keeping things moving so smoothly, not forgetting the exhibitors entering under me and accepting my decisions with sportsmanship in good grace.

All exhibits were presented in great condition with really good coats, neatly trimmed tight feet and were a joy to go over.

Class 139 Large Munsterlander Post Graduate (2,0 Absent)

1: 352. Ms C Simpson and Mrs L Johnston’s LERITON CORVUS ASTRON (B) Impressive 13 month young girl with much to like. Gentle feminine head and kind expression with correct dentition and rounded dark brown eyes. Ears are well set on to nicely shaped head. Well-muscled strong neck leading to good strong top line. She is still developing, but has a good depth of chest and well sprung rib cage. Correct angulation front and rear, with a good turn of stifle. Well-muscled and strong hips and thighs. Tail well set on and carried out level on the move. Correct foot fall from ahead and the side, fluid movement with purpose concentrating on her handler. Her stance when free standing will come with age and experience. I think she will do well and is showing lots of promise for the future. Reserve Best of Breed

2: 351. Ms C Simpson and Mrs L Johnston’s LERITON ANTLIA (B) Littermate Sister to 1 and very similar in conformation, however not so polished standing or confident moving. Kind feminine expression, correctly shaped head, good teeth but slightly excessive overbite at the moment: this will sort itself as her muzzle grows/matures. Correct front angulation, good depth of chest but narrower/leaner and less spring than 1. Good turn of stifle, nice straight top line and tail well set-on. Moved out well with correct foot fall, but not with the same confidence and purpose of her sister. Early days though, and I’m sure she will get there with practice.

Class 140 Large Munsterlander Open (4,0 Absent)

1: 347. Ms J Powell and Mr A Murrell’s ShCh CRUMPSBROOK WOODRUSH (D) Upstanding 8 ½ year old male who clearly still “has it”. Bestowed with all the classical Large Munsterlander features, he has great presence when free standing and shows himself off in the best light in the ring. Masculine, well proportioned head, good dentation, dark round eyes with well set-on ears into a strong muscular neck. Deep chest with well sprung rib cage. Well balanced profile with correct angulation front and rear: well turned stifles. Strong top line into dip at the croup with a well set-on tail. Moved freely with purpose at speed and also walking, correct gait and foot fall both in profile and head-on throughout. Pleased to award him Best of Breed (and to subsequently learn that he also went Gundog Group 4).

2: 349. Mr & Mrs Siddons’ A FOXY GOZER UUT’T VOSSEBELTSEVELD (IMP NLD) (D) Substantially built 4 ½ year old powerful male who I felt was unfortunately slightly off form today from when I have seen him previously. Handsome masculine features, good dentation, dark head and eyes with a strong neck. He has a deep, broad chest and well sprung ribs with plenty of lung space: no doubt that this chap can do a good days work then come back for more. I felt his top line let him down today though, dipping down in the middle a little which then affected the appearance of his back end and was also apparent on the move. Correct front angulation, rear was slightly compromised, good turn of stifle and well set-on tail. Moved well in concert with his handler with correct foot fall in profile and from ahead/behind, but he did have a tendency to “fly his flag”, which again detracted a little from his profile. Never-the-less he is another worthy ambassador for the breed.

3: 350. Ms C Simpson and Mrs L Johnston’s EKKOLANDER PERSEPHONE RED AT LERITON (B) 5 year old girl shown in good hard condition. Kind soft feminine expression with correct angulation front and rear. Moved well off a powerful back end.

4: 348. Ms J Powell and Mr A Murrell’s TUREAGH CRYSTAL CIDER (B) More slightly built 5 ½ year old girl with a lovely kind expression. Got the impression that she would rather have been out in the fields rather than in the ring: not keen on being gone over. However she tried her best and did move well.
