Firstly, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge these beautiful hounds. It was a privilege to accept the appointment, and one that I will remember for a long time.

The day itself was wonderful, with glorious sunshine accompanied by a welcome cool breeze, which I think was appreciated by both handlers and hounds alike, lovely large rings that helped showcase movement in these large hounds. 

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who entered under me and, of course, to those who exhibited on the day. I appreciate that the weather forecast may have deterred some exhibitors and perhaps contributed to the absentees, but I was grateful to everyone who made the effort to attend.

Without exception, every exhibit I went over was presented in clean, tidy, well-maintained condition. I know only too well the hours of preparation, grooming and dedication that go into presenting a dog in top show condition, and it certainly did not go unnoticed. It was a pleasure to judge your dogs. Across all of the breeds, movement was, on the whole, of a very good standard, making my decisions both enjoyable and, at times, challenging.

Thank you also for the excellent sportsmanship shown throughout the day. All exhibitors accepted my decisions with good grace and respect, and that is something I always appreciate.

My sincere thanks also go to my two wonderful stewards, one of whom was my ever-supportive mum! They kept the ring running efficiently, calmly and with a smile throughout the day, while also taking the time to encourage and support newer exhibitors, helping to make everyone feel welcome.

A special mention must go to the young handler who showed both the Borzoi and the Deerhound. Well done, you should be very proud of yourself. Please keep going. If you ever see me at a show and have any questions or would simply like some support, please don't hesitate to come and ask. I know exactly what it feels like to be a young handler in the main ring. One of the greatest things about our sport is that people are always willing to help. Even after more than 30 years of handling and exhibiting, I am still learning something new all the time, and I hope that never changes.

Finally, my thanks once again to the committee for organising such a well-run show, for the fabulous lunch, and for making the whole day such an enjoyable experience. It was a memorable appointment that I shall look back on with great fondness.

 Mrs K McLoughlin - Unstoppable Colors of The Wind of Zantescwtch

Balanced, dignified and mature 9 month old. Pretty, feminine head, with a prominent occiput and slight stop. Strong jaws, with correct strong teeth and bite. Dark almost triangular eyes, correctly angled slightly upwards from inner corner to outer corner, giving the desired dignified and aloof expression of this beautiful breed. Dark Nose in keeping with her dark colouring, low set ears carried close to her head, long, proud, neck, leading to long, sloping shoulders that were well laid back. The correct Afghan Level topline, with prominent and adequate width of her hipbones. She moved freely and confidently, holding her shape well, using her well-bent and correctly angled stifles to push around the ring. Strong and large fore and hind feet with correct spring to her pasterns. Low set tail with the desired ring at the end that she raised proudly while on the move. She was much more settled on the move than 2nd and was smooth yet powerful for such a young girl going around the ring. An exciting youngster with much promise, for me a little light in body today, but balanced this with her excellent breed type and movement. I was pleased to see her place 1st in the Hound Puppy Group and BPIS. Congratulations. I look forward to watch her show career with interest.

Mrs L Webb - Madelion Lady Dementer

Slightly younger girl, with character (Having a lovely day today)😊 It was a shame to not be able to go over her properly as she was being a little fidget for her handler. Another feminine young lady with a well-balanced skull, dark pigment, correct dark eyes and expression. Strong jaw and correct bite. She had a strong, long neck with the signature proud head carriage, decent shoulders, long and sloping upper arm although not the lay of shoulder as 1st, I did like that she had decent depth and bone. Straight and well boned forelegs, correct muscle tone for her age, with a broad loin and the prominent hipbones, Her tail was not her strongest feature, although she carried it proudly on the move. She moved well for her age, showing plenty of promise, with a few puppy hops and playful moments reminding us that she is still very much enjoying her time in the ring.

Miss E Price – Asterion Silent Enigma

A rangy, houndy young man, at nearly 11 months old, he is in that ‘awkward stage’ of development, shooting up and going in. In profile he is reasonably long, elegant and balanced without being overdone. I loved his head and expression, very much my type. It was lean with the correct head proportions masculine without any coarseness, lovely veining and dark pigmentation, large, rounded, black nose, correct large, almond shaped eyes, with a gentle expression. The signature flexible Roman nose, Large, teeth, strong jaw, accentuated occiput, small neat ears held back. A lovely , slightly arched, long neck leading to his shoulders. He has a good length of forearm and his elbows directed backwards. He had a gentle flow to his topline, with the highest point of curve correctly situated over his last rib, age appropriate muscle tone. However, on the day, I would like a little more covering. He has a long, well set tail, that he did show off on the move, and although he lifted it and wagged it, it didn’t go above his back. I was happy to see him enjoy his first ever show. Correct width on his hindquarters, being wider than his shoulders, decent hind angulation. Lovely front feet, oval in shape with his toes close together, and arched over thick pads. His hind feet are ok, would prefer them a little more hare like. Decent depth of brisket, which I have no doubt will improve as he drops and matures, I would prefer a little more spring to his ribs, but again he is a young male in the growth spurt stage. Movement could improve as he matures and settles, placement of the collar and lead would help so not to distract him. He had a long reach and a lovely spring to his pasterns when on the move, but a little over the place today, enjoying his day, but as mentioned, it is his first show, so I am sure with time and practise he will settle and improve. I look forward to watch as he grows.

2 litter brothers just 12 months old who both had a lot to like about them. I look forward to following their progress in the show ring as they continue to mature and develop.

1st & RBOB 

Mr A, Mr N & Mrs E Dawson – Stubbylee Boom Like That JW 

Attractive young man with the most striking fawn colour and dark pigmentation. The correct masculine and elegant, head proportions, more refined than his brother, yet fully in proportion to the rest of him. Excellent veining, skull ever so slightly domed and narrow, joining very gradually to tip of nose, occiput correctly accentuated. correct large almond eyes and well filled underneath, he was aloof and alert, elegant yet powerful. Beautiful dark pigmentation on his large nose, eyes, third eyelid and flews. Strong jaws, with gleaming large teeth. Clean, strong neck which was all in proportion to his head, leading to his correct sloping shoulders. Better topline today compared to 2nd, flowing to a well-balanced fallaway. Correctly placed, well feathered tail, that at the start on the move he wanted to show off, but was steadied by his handler. The most beautiful silky coat, well-muscled and presented in tip top condition as were all 3 exhibits by this kennel. I would prefer a little more depth to his chest, and he didn’t have the spring of rib as his brother, but again time is on his side and I am sure as he matures and drops this will come, he is still young. His front feet are not his fortune, his toes are a little long for me, however he had correct rear feet. He stands on straight, clean forelegs, with accurately placed elbows and slightly sloping pasterns. On the move is where he comes into his own, he is most definitely a showman, and for me, he just has that kind of ring presence that immediately catches the eye. Appropriate reach from his front, he has enough bend of stifle, not overdone, and broad hocks and he used his strong rear to his advantage to help push him forward. When settled, he was a picture, displaying the elegance, grace and effortless drive so characteristic of the breed. His handler was able to allow him to move freely on a loose lead, which is rare and always pleasing to see, and this enabled him to show himself to full advantage. He won this class on the strength of his excellent movement and was much more settled for the challenge, where he really came into his own. I was delighted to award him RBOB, His effortless, ground-covering gait and undeniable charisma in the ring demanded attention every time he moved. 

2nd  

Mr A, Mr N & Mrs E Dawson – Stubbylee into the Mystic

Brilliant diamond white and pure black young lad, litter brother to 1st, and similar comments. When stood I thought he would have been my winner, on the day when compared to 1st, he had more bone, depth of chest and spring of rib for that all important heart and lung room which is needed for this breed. There is a lot to like about him, but he was out moved by his brother today. More of an air of poise and calm than his showman sibling, with the most gentle, dignified, kind expression, his eyes are dark, large and almond shaped and set obliquely and placed correctly (not too wide apart). A lovely large, rounded nose and beautiful small, pointed and delicate ears, set high, nearly touching at his occiput. Again, strong jaws and large strong, gleaming teeth. Reasonably long, slightly arched neck, that already is showing that beautiful stallion like crest, leading to fine withers with a flowing topline, with a well-balanced fallaway, to a low, correctly set tail that he keeps low on the move. Same comments as his brother regarding his feet. Well angulated stifle, which he used to good advantage on the move. He showed pleasing reach and drive, although today he did not move with quite the same purpose or conviction as his brother.

Mrs R Hall – Jansams Bloody Mary JW

A proper pro already at 22 month old. Glamorous, eye catching girl, presented in excellent, muscled, toned condition. She is quite compact and solid, but is very much in proportion and balanced while stood. You really do need to get your hands on her to appreciate this young girl, as her beautiful, full, profuse silky coat covers a lot of her attributes. Her head is strong, and in profile has the correct angles you would want to see in a ‘typical’ borzoi head, with her forehead and upper line of muzzle forming an almost straight, slightly curved line, inclining to the desired Roman nose. She has a lovely aloof, intelligent expression with the desired dark pigment around her eye rims, her large round black nose and flews. Beautiful veining, and deep strong underjaw, the correct powerful bite and large teeth. Initially, front on, I thought her back skull was a little too heavy for me, but upon evaluating her, the thick white marking of her blaze creates an optical allusion as in fact, for me, her head is correctly domed. Her ears are delicate, lying back and neat. She has a slightly arched neck that is in proportion to the rest of her, leading to clean well laid back shoulders, flowing topline with the correct arch, with the highest point of curve situated over her last rib. She has great depth of chest and spring of ribs with the depth of brisket reaching to her elbows. Broad, well-muscled loins showing good strength and power. Acceptable length through the loin in proportion to the rest of her to complete the overall balanced outline. She has enough bone and substance and used her well angled backend, along with a decent spring to her pasterns to move in a straight, effortless powerful drive. Her tail is long and well feathered and held low on the move, she kept her topline as she covered the ground with an ease that would imply she could go on for days. Her feet are not her strongest feature. Her front feet are ok, but to be picky, I would prefer a more oval foot in front; although her toes are close together, well arched with strong, thick pads. Her hind feet were a little too cat-like rather than the desired hare-like shape. However, this did not detract from her overall quality or the pleasing picture she presented. She gives an excellent impression of power and moved with purpose, covering the ground with ease. I was happy to award her BOB as she shone while on the move, which was easy, steady, controlled and powerful. I was pleased to see she was shortlisted in a quality hound group. One to keep an eye on in the future. 

2nd 

DR M J & Mr L M Collins – Palamedees Aneira Demeter

4 year old Houndy, well-built girl leaving nothing to the imagination 😊 Handled very well by her young handler. Presented in good muscled condition with beautiful silky feathering on the backs of her legs, hindquarters and, tail. She was aloof with an air of superiority about her. Her head is feminine, with lovely chiselling, correct almond eye, a little pale for me, which gave a haunting appearance as if she were looking right through me. I would like a darker eye, however the pigmentation on her large round nose, around her eyes and her flews were dark, and gave a lovely contrast against the pretty greys and pale creams of her head. Her head is a little too ‘dished’ with a noticeable stop for my preference. Strong jaws with correct scissor bite and clean, large teeth, neatly held ears, just a tad low for me. She had a lovely strong, reasonably arched, long neck. She could do with a slightly better lay of shoulder as she is a little upright and I would prefer more bend in stifle. She has Clean, straight forelegs, a deep chest, adequate width between her elbows. Broad loins with plenty of muscular development. She is just a touch long in body, which when standing gave the impression of a flatter topline than I would ideally like. However, this was much less apparent on the move, where she maintained her topline well and presented a more balanced overall picture. She has a reasonable fallaway . Her breastbone was correctly slightly pronounced with correct width between elbows with her abdomen very tucked up, A lovely long tail that she held correctly when stood and on the move. Her front feet are a little long, but with the correct thick pads, her hind feet are correct and hare like. She moved with a lovely air of ease, displaying the effortless, elegant gait so typical of the breed. Although slightly straight in both fore and rear angulation, she remained well balanced on the move, combining elegance with power. I would like to see her tighten a little in front, as this impacted her front foot placement when reaching and landing on the move. She showed adequate width behind, which she used to good advantage, driving efficiently and covering the ground with ease, looking up at her young handler with admiration and joy. I could imagine her on a hunt.

1st 

Mr A, Mr N & Mrs E Dawson – CH Stubbylee Chiara Mia

Nearly 7 year old fully matured elegant lady. I had the pleasure to go over her litter sister 2 years ago, and when I saw her enter the ring, I was very much looking forward to getting my hands on her too, and very much like her sister, she didn’t disappoint. 

Another girl you need to really get your hands on to appreciate as when stood she initially appears to be short coupled and short in neck, she isn’t. Presented in hard muscled condition and a beautiful silky, plush, velvety coat, complete with silky feathering. Dark black pigmentation which is striking against her almost pure white head, she has these beautiful white eyelashes, that look like she has put on white mascara, they really do show up against her coal black almond eyes. Correct proportions to her head, with a calm, aloof and aristocratic expression. Defined occiput and beautiful veining with small, pointed and delicate ears that are set high and nearly touching at occiput, folded back neatly along her neck, almost appearing invisible completing the picture. Strong jaws with the correct bite and large clean teeth. Her neck is relatively long, strong and arched flowing into her well-laid back shoulders. She has a deep chest and a moderate spring of rib, allowing for ample lung and heart room. A strong back, with the correct topline, leading to well-developed loins with the correct tuck up. She has straight, strong legs, with well angulated stifles. Best feet on the day, her front feet are the correct shape with well arched toes and thick pads and then hare-like on the back. Lovely long , rather low set tail that she carried correctly on the move. She moved with an effortless, ground-covering gait, making full use of every stride. It’s light, yet powerful with a strong drive from her hindquarters. I gave her serious consideration for both BOB and RBOB; however, in the challenge she tended to high-step slightly in front, which ultimately influenced my decision.

2nd  

Mrs S & Mr M Bingland & Phillips - Rua Soleil Kurazh (Imp Ita) 

Nearly 3 year old male who is starting to come into his own. Well presented in muscular condition. Beautiful, flowing, silky coat, which looked a picture as it floated gracefully in the breeze when stacked. You can see he is starting to drop into himself to create a picture of balance. He has a lovely head, combining masculinity, strength with elegance. Noticeable veining enhanced his alert and aloof expression, complemented by the correct dark, almond-shaped eyes and beautiful dark pigmentation, including dark pigmented eye rims, large, round nose and flews. He has a deep strong underjaw, the correct powerful bite and large teeth, neat ears, carried correctly, accentuated occiput completing an attractive and breed-typical head. His neck is well muscled, but is a little short to the proportions of his head and body for me. When going over him, it didn’t have that beautiful flow into his shoulders. His shoulders however, are clean and sloping back, with good return of upper arm. He has a flowing correct topline, a gentle fallaway, a correctly set tail that he did like to show off on the move. He is well bodied and well boned, with a lovely deep chest and spring of rib leading to his correct tuck up. Well-muscled hindquarters, correctly wider than his shoulders, ensuring a stable stance. Enough hind angulation for me, I wouldn’t want anymore. I liked his front very much, his width, the muscle, the depth and his bladed bone, with his elbows directed backwards. He had the correct slightly sloping, strong and flexible pasterns, correct front feet, oval in shape and well arched over strong thick pads. To be picky, his rear feet were a little too oval and not as hare-like for me. On the move he was a little unsettled, clearly enjoying his time in the ring. At times he tended to throw his front as he danced and bounced upwards, rather than driving smoothly forward, which interrupted the steady, flowing gait I was looking for. However, there were glimpses of the quality of movement to come, with his powerful hindquarters and well-laid shoulders allowing him to show moments of excellent drive and reach. As he matures and settles, I have no doubt he will make the most of his construction.

Mrs S & Mr M Bingland & Phillips – Clanonaiglen Affric

4 and half year old big lad, with a Gentle and friendly expression, carrying himself with an air of quiet dignity. Stood and on the move he covered a lot of ground. His head for me is not his strong point, I would prefer less of a stop but it was correctly broadest at ears, tapering slightly to eyes, with a flat skull and carried well. He did have lovely black rims with a lovely soft look, I would personally prefer a slightly darker eye, but it was acceptable. He had the correct black and slightly aquiline nose with powerful Jaws and lovely clean large teeth. A strong, nicely shaped neck, with good reach, leading to well laid shoulders with the correct width. Acceptable topline and a lovely deep chest, would prefer a bit more spring of ribs for his size to present a more balanced picture. Lovely straight forelegs and a good broad forearm with the most lovely compact feet with strong nails. Powerful hindquarters with wide set hips, good bend of stifle that he used on the move. Correct tail set with a lovely long thick tail reaching almost to the ground and correctly curved when on the move. Presented in decent muscle tone with the correct shaggy coat texture, which was thick and crisp to the touch. This lad was the epitome of calm confidence, taking everything in his stride. At times he appeared a little laid back and tended to pace when moving, but when his young handler encouraged him to move on with a little more purpose, he came into his own. He made excellent use of his well-angled forequarters and hindquarters, showing the drive and reach his construction promises. There were moments of effortless, active movement, covering the ground with an easy, long stride, demonstrating the quality he possesses when fully engaged. Given the warm conditions, it was understandable that he was not always inclined to give his all, so I forgave him! 😊

Mr M & Mrs J Strong – Xerxes Omar Ter Dolen (Imp Bel)

2 year old male who stood dignified and gentle with beautifully light flowing movement and flowing balanced lines right from his nose to his tail. Lovely long, masculine, narrow head with a skull that is moderately wide between his ears. Bright, large and oval eyes with an intelligent expression. Correct ear set, long, hanging close to his skull with beautiful long silky hair. Correct bite, strong jaws, with large strong teeth. Long, well-muscled neck, elegantly sweeping into well-laid, well-muscled sloping shoulders. He had a fairly broad back that was ever so slightly arched over his muscular loin. He had correct strong hip bones that were set wide apart. A long curved, well feathered tail, carried correctly when on the move. Moderate length feet with long and well arched toes. A moderate bend to his stifle with low hocks that he used effortlessly to ensure his movement was smooth showing both reach and drive coming and going and in profile. Nothing is over done on this young man, and he is a good honest hound. Presented in excellent condition with the most beautiful shine to his gorgeous coat, that shone like a newly shined conker in the sun. He stood balanced and gracefully and on the move he looked like he could do the job he was bred for. Again I was pleased to see he was shortlisted in a quality hound group. I think the best is yet to come for this lad as he further matures.
