Newton Abbot & South Devon Canine Society

Breed: Part Gundog Breeds

Newton Abbot & South Devon Canine Association 29 August 2026

I was honoured to be asked to stand in for your original scheduled judge and very pleased with my overall entry. Some lovely dogs to go over and I thoroughly enjoyed my day. Thank you to the Committee for their patience the evening before with my transport problems and great hospitality. A special thank you to Victoria who stewarded so expertly for me and kept me on track.

English Setter

Post Grad (2)

1st Wilson’s Sharnyx Reyncloud at Lucanix

Well balanced nearly 2 year old blue boy. Masculine in head with correct kind eye and correct scissor bite. Lovely in angles for and aft with enough neck, firm topline and nice depth to chest. Good tail set and well-muscled. Moved very well, straight back and away. RBOB

2nd Ridsdill’s Sharnyx She’s So Pretty

And yes she is pretty! Clean balanced outline on this 3 year old orange girl. Lovely in head with correct skull shape and correct shape and colour to eyes. Again correct in angulation front and rear allowing her to move very well holding her topline. My notes say that she was slightly less tight in elbow than my winner but close thing.

Open (2)

1st Wilson’s Ir Sh Ch Ravensett Giovanni

What a picture. Strong masculine 8 year old orange dog. Lovely classic head with good eye shape and kind expression. Loved his balanced outline with good length of neck, deep in chest, firm topline and strong rear. Good angulation allowing him to move with drive and positivity. Presented in lovely coat and condition. Worthy BOB.

 2nd Ridsdill’s Sharnyx Here’s Bonnie

4 year old blue girl with nice overall balance. A lot to like from her pretty head, good depth to chest, neat feet and firm topline. Would have preferred slightly tighter in the elbows so today just didn’t have the movement of the winner.

Welsh Springer Spaniel

Graduate (2)

1st Morgan’s Rubydown Summer Magic

15 month old bitch with lovely outline. Good overall construction with plenty of bone. Pretty feminine head with gentle expression. Correct angles fore and aft shown in good condition. Although slightly longer than 2nd, was more settled on the move holding her topline.

2nd Best’s Evangelise Astraea

Oh what fun! 8 month old bitch who gave her handler some moments but when settled showed enough to assess her. Balanced and well-marked. Good depth to chest, nice tight feet, good in shoulders and topline with correct tailset. Moved well in parts showing promise. BPIB

Limit (2)

1st Attwood’s Roxdale Wispa by Kylowen

Loved the outline on this bitch who has a well-balanced feminine head. Enough length of neck flowing into very good shoulders. Good spring of rib with strong loin. Presented in lovely condition which showed in her lovely collected and true movement. RBOB

2nd Best’s Evangelise Perseus

Litter brother to BPIB who has a lot going for him. Nice masculine head with correct ear placement and kind eye. A bit on the taller side for me personally but will be interesting to see how he balances up going forward. Moved well.

Open (6,1)

1st Williams’ Nyliram the Alibi for Trebettyn JW

Although a shade longer in loin than maybe preferable, this 3 year old dog exuded quality in all other areas. Lovely typical head, good strong neck and correct shoulder angulation. Strong in topline with slight arch to loin and correct tailset. Shown in great coat and condition which allowed him to move like a dream. Happy to award him BOB.

2nd Morgan’s Benoveor Endless Love at Rubydown

Very pretty 4 year old bitch who again was very typey. Feminine in head, good length of neck, correct angles fore and aft and moved well. Pushed hard to win this class but just pipped at the post on the day.

3rd IrShCh Kylowen Demelza VW IrVCh

A lovely 11.5 girlie who gave the youngsters a run for their money in this class. A credit to her owner.

Gordon Setter

Post Grad (1)

1st Smith’s Kewstoke Sea Queen Zena

A nicely balanced 2 year old bitch. Well balanced and nicely developed outline with adequate coat for her age. Feminine in head with kind eye. Good length of neck leading into correct shoulder placement and firm topline. Strong in the rear with enough stifle. She moved well but a little close behind today. Stood alone BOB.

Weimaraner

Post Grad (1)

1st Kerslake’s Sabsky Karlstejn

My notes say very exuberant 17-month dog who gave his owner a little bit of a time! However, when he calmed down, he showed enough of his future promise. Good in outline with pleasing masculine head. Nice bone throughout with tight feet. Deep in chest and strong in the loin. Moved well when settled.

Open (3)

1st Goord’s Dartview Formula One

Well balanced and smart nearly 4-year-old dog. Nothing over exaggerated and presented in very good condition. Masculine in head with lovely eye. Strong neck, good angles front and rear, neat tight feet and lovely level topline. Moved very well with drive holding topline as he went. BOB

2nd Reakes’ Ir Sh Ch Trihyrne Love Letters

My first opportunity to go over a long-haired Weimaraner and this 6-year-old bitch did not disappoint. Lovely head with good overall balance and pleasing outline. Lovely in coat and moved very well. RBOB

3rd Kerslake’s Sabsky Karlstejn

German Shorthaired Pointer

Grad (2,2)

Open (1)

1st Taylor & Taylor-Morris’s Pelenrise All Guns Blazing JW (BOB)

Balanced liver & white 4.5-year-old dog, Masculine head with correct ear set and eye colour. In excellent muscled condition. Correct shoulder and stifle angulation allowed him to move well and steady, straight going away and coming back to me. Although this boy stood alone, I was more than happy to award BOB.

Hungarian Vizsla

Grad (4)

1st Debian Dionysus for Ruamadra

13-month-old litter brothers and both very typical of the breed. This one was balanced and very clean cut. Masculine in head with nicely coloured oval eye and correct ear set.

Good in front, topline and tail set and moved very well. RBOB and BPIB

2nd Hussey’s Debian Dirty Harry

Slightly smaller than the winner and a little less balanced in outline but a lot of comments apply as the winner. On the day was edged on movement.

3rd Parker & Gist’s Mezovad Athena

Limit (3,1)

1st Parker & Gist’s Glenbrow’s Rouge JW

2-year-old bitch with nice feminine head and correct eye shape and ear set. Liked her straight front and depth of chest. Moved well on the day.

2nd Challis’ Vizslanya Domekos JW

Lovely dog on the stack and pushed the winner very hard. Masculine in head, good strong neck into correct shoulders. Lovely in topline and good in rear angulation. Just missed out today as weaker in the front which showed in his movement coming towards me (my notes say Shame!).

Open (3)

1st Challis’ Vizslanya Visszater

Beautiful outline for type and balance with no exaggeration. Lovely head with typical eye and lovely expression. Her neck flows into good well-muscled shoulders, straight front and tight feet. Firm topline and good rear end construction. Moved freely and straight fore and aft. Happy to award her BOB and pleased to see she achieved Gundog Group 2

2nd Reakes’s Vizslanya Varur with Thrihyrne JW

Litter brother to winner. Bold dog with masculine head and good shoulder and stifle angulation. Would have preferred a little less slope to the croup and on the move, he was a little weaker than his sister coming towards me.

3rd Parker & Gist’s Glenbrow’s Calamity JW
