Bournemouth Canine Association Premier open show 6 August 2026
My thanks to the committee & club for the invitation to judge. My thanks to my hard working stewards, Judy & Sandy for keeping the ring running smoothly which made my day much easier. To all of the exhibitors for their entries & accepting my decisions with good sportsmanship.
Overall, all dogs were presented in a nice clean condition with clean teeth (which is critical for me) & good temperaments. It was an extremely hot day & the grass was very dry & spiky which unfortunately not all of the dogs liked, but I done my best to make allowances for this where I could.
Miniature long-haired dachshund
Class 26 junior 3 - 1st Phillips - Dizzydax’s Storming Norman At Summerview. Nearly 7 month old dog, nice conical shape to his head good length of neck into prominent chest & good shoulder angulation. Nice tight feet, good length of ribbing and short loin with good rear angulation. Nice level top line, which he maintains at all times. On the move he was straight & true coming and going with a lovely reach & drive to his overall movement. BOB & BPIB.
2nd Stevens – Crownlake Dream Weaver On Sidburyhill. 9 month old black and cream who was unlucky to come up against 1st today. Nice shape to head, slightly shorter in neck, good front angulation, slightly smaller in chest. Good length of ribbing but slightly longer in loin, nice level top line & good rear regulation but just slightly preferred the movement of number one today.
Class 27 post graduate 3/1 – 1st Westaway – Minard Whispering Angel At Treranch. Good shaped conical head with moderate length of neck, most prominent chest & good front angulation which is what won her the class today. Moderate length to ribbing, slightly shorter than I would like, but good rear angulation & a nice level top line which she holds on the move & good movement all around today.
2nd Church – Chriskim’s Golden Ticket At Floxie. 21 month old cream with good shaped conical head & dark expressive eyes, good length neck. Slightly forward on shoulder and short on upper arm which is what lost her class today. Good length to ribbing, slightly under angulated on the rear, but good level top line and good movement all around.
Class 28 open 5/1 – 1st Phillips – Summerview Lucy Locket. Black and tan of 13 months. Lovely shaped head with nice almond eyes, well placed earset & good dentition. Lovely long slightly arched neck flowing into a prominent chest & good shoulder angulation. Nice length to the sternum and ribbing, loin slightly longer than I would like. Good rear angulation & nice level top line with good movement in all directions & pushed hard for BOB today.
2nd Broad – Bronia Wolfgang Puck. Slightly smaller in size than number one but good overall shape and nicely balanced. Good head with nice dark almond eyes. Slightly shorter in neck but fits into the overall appearance of the dog. Good shoulder placement with nice prominent chest & good ground clearance. Nice length of ribbing and short loin with good rear angulation and good movement all round. Very tight between one and two today & could easily swap places.
Standard smooth-haired dachshund
Class 29 Junior 1 - 1st Mills – Cedavoch Squall At Greyvista. 9 month old shaded red girl of good overall size, shape and balance. Although she stood alone in the variety today, I really liked this girl & am confident she will push hard for top honours in the future. Lovely shaped conical head with dark expressive almond eyes & lovely length & slight arch to neck. Good prominent fore chest & shoulder angulation with reasonable ground clearance leads to good overall length of ribbing and loin. Good rear angulation & a nice level top line. Not the most settled on the move today, but I would say that is due to the spiky grass & one of the exhibits I made allowance for. BOB & BPIB.
Miniature smooth-haired dachshund
Class 32 Junior 6/1 1st Cato – Lokmadi Lindy Hop of Earldax. 12 month old shaded red of good overall size and balance. Nice conical head with dark almond eyes leading to a good elegant length of neck & good front angulation with nice amount of ground clearance & tidy feet. A prominent sternum & keel that extends well back with strong ribbing and short loin. Good rear angulation & a nice level top line which she held on the move, slightly close behind but overall a good mover & pushed hard for BOB today.
2nd Ergis – Siouxline Trojan. 9 month old red brindle boy with a lovely shape to his head & nice dark almond eyes. Long slightly arched neck leads to good front angulation & a deep chest. Slightly less ground clearance than one, but his keel extends well back with a good length to ribbing and a short loin. Reasonable rear angulation with a nice level top line & good movement all around. For me he is just slightly too big overall & this lost him the class. BPIB.
Class 33 post graduate 6/1 – 1st Forge – Normpug Apricot Beauty. 4 year old bitch of a great overall size & shape, what I would class as a correct sized mini. Nice conical shaped head with dark almond eyes & good ear set leads to a lovely length of neck & good lay of shoulder. Moderate depth of chest, not overly done, but suits the overall size & moderate ground clearance. Good length of ribbing & a short tight loin creates a level top line. Moderate rear angulation but the best mover in the class and that’s what won the class today.
2nd Ergis – Siouxline Trinity. 9 month old red brindle girl with a lovely shaped head & dark almond eye. Good length neck & correct lay of shoulder, good depth of chest but, for me, slightly lacking ground clearance. Good length of ribbing but loin slightly too long, reasonable rear angulation but not the best mover behind coming and going today.
Class 34 open 4/1 – 1st Bullis – Amaffrey Sirius Black. Black & tan of good overall size & balance. Great shaped “houndy” head with nice dark almond eyes, good dentition & ear placement. Perfect length of neck with a slight arch leading to a correct lay of shoulder, nice fore chest, without being too prominent, & correct ground clearance. His keel extends well back with a good length of ribbing & a nice strong loin & a lovely level top line, which is held perfectly on the move. Good rear angulation, in balance with the front, good movement in all directions today which helped earn him BOB.
2nd Bosworth – Bronia Solange at Louromi JW. Slightly smaller in size than 1st but good in overall balance & shape. Good shaped conical head with a nice dark almond eye and good ear set. Moderate slightly arched neck leads to a correct lay of shoulder but upper arm is slightly short for me and has just enough ground clearance. Good depth of chest & good length of ribbing with a short strong loin. Nice rear angulation & movement in all directions, very tight between one and two today.
Standard wire-haired dachshund
Class 35 junior 5/1 – Four really nice dogs who all had something to love about them, the variety has a strong future if this class is anything to go by. 1st Phillips – Tendrow Story of Success. 6 month old girl with a nice conical head, dark expressive almond eye & good furnishings for her young age. Lovely length of neck with a good prominent chest, without being overdone, & correct lay of shoulder and front angulation overall. Her keel extends well back & she has a good length of ribbing with a short loin. Her top line is okay at the moment but that will firm up & strengthen with time and age. Good rear angulation, she was the most settled and the best mover in this class today. BPIB.
2nd Buxton – Cloudside Xena of Mereblake. Just out of puppy by a week, I really liked this girl and she pushed number one hard for the win. Correct shaped conical head with dark almond eyes & good length of neck. Good lay of shoulder & nice front angulation overall with a reasonable depth chest. Another with a keel that extends well back & a good length of ribbing, loin is slightly longer than 1. Correct rear angulation, she is a good settled mover and held her top line well.
Class 36 post graduate 1 – 1st Buxton – Hazelglade Harriet. 2 year-old girl with a nice shaped head, dark almond eyes, good ear set & furnishings. Lovely long slightly arched neck leads to correct lay of shoulder & good front angulation. Good depth of chest & length of ribbing, she also had lovely ground clearance. Good rear regulation & good overall muscled condition, she holds the top line really well on the move, very nice.
Class 37 open 6/1 – This was by far my toughest class of the day, 5 dogs who could easily swap places on another day. 1st Phillips – Ch Tendrow Will To Succeed. Lovely boy with overall good quality, balance and movement was best in the class on the day. Good shaped conical head with a nice dark oval eye and good ear set. Lovely long slightly arched neck with correct lay of shoulder, good front angulation & a nice prominent fore chest. He stands on nice tight feet with plenty of ground clearance, has a good length of keel coupled with ample ribbing & a nice strong firm loin. Good rear angulation, he moves lovely and straight and true away and back and the best overall mover in the class today. BOB.
2nd Akehurst – Tendrow Down to the Wire at Bramdach JW. Brother to my first place in the class & he warrants very much the same comments overall. I have judged this boy previously and very much like him, but his movement wasn’t quite as settled today, I suspect this is down to a mixture of the ground & not having his usual handler.
Miniature wire-haired dachshund
Class 40 open 2 – 1st Kirkwood – Helydon Vexy Vixen JW. Good overall size and balance with a nice conical head, correct almond eye & furnishings. She has a good length of neck & good front angulation, not the biggest of chests but just enough. She has good ground clearance & length of ribbing coupled to a nice short loin. Correct rear angulation & good muscled condition overall, helps her hold her top line at all times. A good mover away and back, nice, straight and true. BOB.
2nd Eyre-Brook – Int Ch Marshal Radetzky Vitoraz at Gentlegorse (Imp Aut). For me he is too big overall and does not truly define a mini. Apart from that he is a nice dog overall with a good shape of head & almond eye. Nice length to neck leading to correct shoulder angulation. He has a prominent fore chest & strong keel with a good length of ribbing but is slightly longer in loin than I would prefer. He has good rear angulation and is a good mover overall.
